Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-These brief books sympathetically present the history and community life practices of three Native American tribes. While the material is not new, the texts are simple enough for younger and lower-level readers. Effective full-color illustrations of tribal practices and crafts and a few photos are included. Iroquois and Nez Perce include a myth, but the storytellers or sources are not credited. Nez Perce includes Chief Joseph's moving speech. All of the texts, however, are somewhat repetitive, some terms are not adequately explained, and the glossaries are in very small type. Sentences often begin with conjunctions and adverbs, a questionable grammatical example for readers this young. Still, these are adequate introductions to the multiplicity of Native peoples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Children's book On the Iroquois, November 4, 2001

This review is from: Iroquois (Native Americans (Abdo)) (Library Binding)
I was referred to this book by the contributing editor, Barbara Gray-Kanatiyosh. She is a Mohawk lady who has an Iroquois Homework Help team (***) where she answers questions about her people's culture.

I was very impressed by Kanatiyosh's web site and the help she gave me and was thrilled when I bought this book. Now I can teach my nieces and nephews about the Iroquois and know the information given is culturally sensitive and accurate.

The artwork and photos of the Iroquois people are wonderful and new. Not the same old pictures and information you see in every Iroquois book. My favorite sections are the ones explaining Iroquois society and how longhouses are built. This book is wonderful. I am surprised it hasn't won an award yet!
