5.0 out of 5 stars Now it is Callie's turn for a story..., February 12, 2004
This review is from: An Irresistible Bachelor (Mass Market Paperback)
The story begins the day after a lavish gala hosted by the Hall Foundation. Callie Burke is an art conservator who had just been handed a job offer that could easily make her career! Grace Woodward Hall introduced Callie to Jackson "Jack" Walker during the gala. Jack had just purchased back a famous painting that had been sold off by his own father years ago. Knowing Grace would not have introduced Callie to work on the conservation of the painting if she was less than excellent, he immediately offers the job. But Callie knows Jack's playboy background and knows danger when she sees it. Even so, she ends up accepting and travels to his mansion, Buona Fortuna, to work on the painting.

The attraction between the two is obvious to those around, including Jack's stuck up mother, Mercedes. Jack became engaged to a lady of his own class only three weeks prior and Mercedes could not have been more displeased to see how Jack reacted to Callie, so beneath him in class. But Jack always gets what he wants and he wants Callie from the moment he first saw her. He is even willing to break off his engagement to prove he prefers Callie.

But is he really a new, improved, socially responsible Jack Walker? Or is he still a playboy? And can he ever accept the secret Callie has kept hidden her entire life?

***** Callie Burke and Jack Walker were introduced in the romantic suspense book, "An Unforgettable Lady", which hit book stores only a few weeks ago. You do not need to read the previous book, which is Grace and John's story, to totally understand this one though. Both books easily stand alone. However, this story will mean more to you if you do read both books. Grace and "John" are secondary characters in this novel, along with another hot bachelor, Gray.

The author succeeds in giving each character their own personality, which is not an easy thing to accomplish! No suspense in this tale, but the plot rolls along at a wonderful pace and the reader never has time to get bored. Recommended to all! Now if only Gray could someday get his own story told. *****

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT QUITE IRRESISTIBLE, August 16, 2010

This review is from: An Irresistible Bachelor (Mass Market Paperback)
Written in 2004 An Irresistible Bachelor is the companion book to Jessica Bird (JR Ward's) AN UNFORGETTABLE LADY. Each can easily be read as stand-alones however you'll get much more out of this one if you read them in order. Having said that I should also tell you that while I loved Grace and particularly John from the first book, Jack and Callie's romance here was a major disappointment and has turned out to be my least favourite Bird/Ward book to date. Unfortunately I just couldn't ever get a feel for them as a couple, and without the suspense factor from the last book or any real notable sexual tension this time, the dreary storyline involving art restoration, family secrets and multi-billionaire businessmen running for governor just wasn't enough to hold my interest.

However this is still Ward writing, so while the plot never grabbed me it does of course have its moments, they're just few and far between. For example I learned everything I ever (didn't) want to know about restoring art. Thankfully there are some great secondary characters; like Jack's meddling mother, a one armed chef and Artie the dog. My wannabe boyfriend John Smith shows up again although he doesn't get to speak and we meet Gray, who had me wondering if he was the same Grayson Bennett from The Moorehouse Legacy book (His Comfort And Joy?) Speaking of which we also get a brief cameo from Spike (A Man In A Million) In the end though when you care more about a little dog and cameo spotting then the heroes you know you're in trouble and it was with a lot of eye rolling that I finished this book.

Callie Burke is a struggling art conservationist so when she's given the chance to restore a world famous painting she of course jumps at the offer. This job could make her whole career however she probably should have also considered that's she'd be working with its owner too; multi-billionaire (really!? Multi Billionaire?? Is that much money really necessary, what's wrong with just a plain ole millionaire?? Anyways Callie's going to be working alongside the notorious womanizer Jack Walker. She's determined to keep things strictly professional, after all he is engaged but he's also just so damn sexy. Now she just has to make sure he doesn't learn her secret. Dun dun dah...

Jack Walker is a practical man (who BTW was way more interesting in An Unforgettable Lady) He runs his life and fortune effortlessly and except for the occasional fight with his interfering, live in mother and some bad driving skills doesn't foresee anything changing. That is until the moment he sets eyes on Callie. He wants her like he's never wanted anything before and the more he gets to know her the more he also realizes what his life is missing. This isn't just infatuation and to prove it he's willing to end his engagement even if that damages his chances of becoming a mayoral candidate. Will he ever be able to overcome his former reputation and convince Callie that he really loves her? And what the hell has she done to his painting; she was supposed to be a professional

5.0 out of 5 stars And the story continues......, August 23, 2006
This review is from: An Irresistible Bachelor (Mass Market Paperback)
This is great. This book answered the questions that were left unanswered in "An Unforgettable Lady". The story moves on, and fills in what you wonder about from the 1st one.

I fell in love with Jack. I kinda disliked him in the first book because of his playboy ways, but then he redeemed himself when his own story was told.

Great read. Buy it today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jessica Bird creates An Irresistible Bachelor, December 2, 2011
Second in the Unforgettable Lady romance series revolving around a group of friends and their families on the East Coast.

Another warm and intelligent romance from Bird between two people one of whom combines the artistic with the scientific while the other is ruthless in business. It explores the insecurities of a woman fed up with secrets yet unable to throw off a lifetime of keeping them while it delights in a man's first experience with love. No real surprise there after reading of his parents!

Ward continues to use misperception between Jack and Callie to create the greatest tension although Callie's accident with the painting incorporated a good bit of fear. What I don't understand is why Jack didn't throw his mother's origins back at her?! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Nor why Callie didn't get on the phone to Grace a lot sooner.

I appreciate Ward not insulting us or her intelligent characters' understanding of the realities of political campaigning. I also adored Jack continually stepping up to defend Callie!

The cover definitely gives off that playboy air with Jack Walker looking out at us, his shirt unbuttoned to display a gorgeous chest and his bow tie undone as he stands at the foot of a curving staircase. Jack definitely has the look of a determined and sexy man with that five o'clock shadow and his assessing gaze.

The title sums up what An Irresistible Bachelor Jack Walker is as well as an indicator of the reputation he must overcome with both Massachusetts and Callie.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is why I read romance books, January 14, 2010

This review is from: An Irresistible Bachelor (Mass Market Paperback)
I had not liked a book I read for quite a while now and was starting to think it was just me, until I read this book. This book was fantastic!! It's what I love about romance books. I read this author under her other name, JR Ward and I love those books as well. She is just a very talented writer that develops great characters and stories. I didn't want this one to end. All of her books either written as JR Ward or Jessica Bird are worth reading and you will truly enjoy them. The sexual tension she builds causes tingles and the love scenes are just right, the hero makes you swoon. The heroine is likable and you could see why he fell in love with her(unlike some books where the heroine is so shrewish you wonder what the appeal is). I am downloading the rest of Jessica Birds books on my kindle. I don't even care what they're about. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful romance, March 30, 2004
This review is from: An Irresistible Bachelor (Mass Market Paperback)
Jack Walker buys back a renowned Copley portrait of an ancestor that his father years ago sold to bring in cash to fund an elitist lifestyle. While making his five million dollar symbolic purchase from the Hall Foundation, Jack's friend Grace Hall introduces him to art restorer Callie Burke. After just ten minutes in her presence Callie occupies his dreams though he is engaged to someone else.

Jack offers Callie a chance to restore the masterpiece, which after twice refusing, the poor Callie finally agrees to do so. She travels from her New York residence to perform her craft at his Boston mansion. As Jack and Callie become acquainted they fall in love, but he knows she hides a secret from him that makes him believe she does not trust him. What he does not know is that she promised her beloved half-sister Grace that she would never reveal the identity of their common father.

This is a warm contemporary romance that stars a delightful lead couple, several nice secondary players like Grace and his fiancée, and boneheads like his mother and her dad. The story line provides the audience an insight into restoration, but mostly focuses on the attraction between Jack and Callie that if encouraged would most likely derail his bid for the Governorship of the Commonwealth. Sub-genre fans will find Jessica Bird's latest tale irresistible.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't read the intro!, August 30, 2011

I just paid $7.99 for this book, but the forward written by JR Ward literally details the entire plot of the book... even the "surprise" twist. This completely ruined the book for me. I'm going to request a refund.
