Delightful Space Opera Spoof,
By She Who Reads (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Irresponsible Captain Tylor Complete TV Series Remastered DVD Collection (DVD)
Irresponsible Captain Tylor captures the best elements of classic science fiction humor with some unusual twists. The traditional elements include the crew of misfits in a battered old destroyer, who (in spite of the odds) survive and frequently triumph over the alien forces and their own somewhat unscrupulous military high command. Irresponsible Captain Tylor provides its unique spin on this sub-genre in the form of Captain Tylor -- young (age 20) with his entire military background consisting of a short stint in the military pension office. The surprisingly well developed and generally sympathetic elf-like aliens wonder whether Tylor is a genius or an idiot. Tylor's crew of misfits in the destroyer Soyokaze decide that while he doesn't embody many (or any) military virtues, he is fun to have around. Tylor is warm-hearted but also magnificently irresponsible.
The series of 26 episodes has a well connected trajectory. Only a few episodes contain pointless filer. Fortunately, the writers left the question "Is Tylor a hidden genius, a lucky idiot, or (perhaps) a bit of both?" unresolved. The result is a surprisingly satifying conclusion. In the finest tradition of space opera, the laws of phyics are cheerfully ignored. My personal favorite is the flag waiving on the bows of the destroyer Soyokaze in deep space. (The emblem on the flag appears to be a tomato.) The music is pleasing, with a mix of cheery pop and light jazz. One later episode contains a lengthy space battle choreographed to classical music that is a tour de force.

A modern classic!,

I picked this box up at a closing-out sale at my local FYE. I had always wanted to see this show but I had no idea what I was in for. As advertised, Justy Ueki Tylor is a ridiculously carefree guy to the point everybody wants to strangle him; however, the real comedy is in its wacky but lovable cast of characters including an android in love, a pilot who's terrified of women, and an admiral who attempts to commit seppuku every time he's upset. As a big fan of Leiji Matsumoto, I picked up on many subtle homages to his genius in this show; one of the characters is even drawn in a similar style as his. However, "Captain Tylor" is definitely its own show. The fun thing is that while some elements of the plot were very predictable (How will Tylor get out of THIS one?) the major storyline was not, and there are definitely some interesting plot twists! By the end of the show, I was in love with it, and you will be too! ^_^

This is a collection of the classic anime Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Full of laughs, fights, and the sort of logic that can only exist in anime, this is a must-have for any true fan. Easy watching, and with chapters set up for easy skipping of title sequences.

While I was watching the show I felt like the episodes are somehow connected to each other like no other anime series. In most series what happens in one episode stays in that episode or remembered via flashbacks. In Captain Tylor characters actually talk about past adventures or mention how their captain behaved in some certain situation, making the 26-episode series a whole. The characters are well drawn and developed during the series. Almost all of the minor characters contribute to the story, some do feel very cliche but likeable nonetheless. I also loved the animation style, its definely old-school, none of that CGI crap. Not that I'm against it but I have seen some CGI stuff terribly gone wrong, or wasted on crappy subject matter. The ships and the characters are very well designed. The Soyokaze, Captain Tylors ship, looks like a WW2 u-boat, has that nostalgic look. On a minor note, this series and the movie "Down Periscope" has a lot in common. Coincidence, I can't be sure. But if you liked one of them you will love the other. Finally, before I forget, I have seen many, many animes and this series has one of the best endings I have seen, loved it, definetly. I highly recommend it for the core anime fans.

I was kind of hesitant about this show , not knowing anything about it , so after reading the reviews and seeing it at a great price I took a chance.
I'm glad I did . The artwork is kind of showing its age , but still good . The main things are the story and the characters, that's where this show shines. This show keeps you entertained , I was amazed when the first disc ended because I thought I had missed some episodes ,it seemed to finish too quickly , so I checked the menu to make sure I had watched the whole thing and I had. The thing I'm trying to say is that I didn't get bored , like in some movies or shows ,where there are parts where the pace slows to a crawl . I didn't feel like that, here everything cruises along at a steady pace and before you know it , the show is over. So if your looking for a good series , try out Captain Tylor , you'll probably enjoy it.

Captain Tylor follows the titular Justy Ueki Tylor (age 20), as he stumbles from a career with the naval pension office into the command chair of a destroyer. Lazy and irresponsible to a fault, he none the less manages to defeat enemy after enemy, through a combination of astounding luck and planned self-interest.
The greatest part of the series is the character interactions, from the XO who constantly takes tranquilizers and stress tank treatments to put up with Tylor, to the ships doctor who measures his time sober with a 24 hour hourglass, the characters manage to create some decent laughs and push the story forward. Despite being a little low key on the action, what does occur is always apropos to the episode overall. And the main character will keep you, just like every other member of his crew and his enemies, wondering if he is a genius or a lucky moron.

I LOVE this anime!!! Talk about a show that just makes you smile! This is one of my new favorites classic in every way. The Dub cast was so great and really did a wonderful job Rightstuf PLEASE start dubbing again! Anyway Captain Tylor to me is one of those chacthers you just can't help but watch and then ask yourself okay "What are you going to do?" That's half the fun! And what we need more of these days IMO is an anime or any show really that's just pure fun and "The Irresponsible Captain Tylor" is just that Fun! ^_^
