Wonderfully dark music, October 10, 2006
This review is from: Irreversible (Score) (Audio CD)
I enjoyed (not sure if that is actually the right word or not) the film, Irreversible, and I thought the music, though sparse, was very effective. I can't imagine the opening club scene without Bangalter's bizarre, pulsing music - one of my favorite film/music moments ever. I have no idea how he came up with something so perfect.
I'm not sure if all this music was composed with the intention of it being in the film, or if the tracks that actually appear in the film were supplemented to fill out the soundtrack. Either way, most of the songs are very thematically unified. It's nice to find an electronic soundtrack that isn't just another mix CD with a lot of random songs.
The songs that don't appear in the movie are very very repetitive, but not boring. A few of the songs are obviously derived from the same source material. You'll recognize the beats and bass line, but each have a different character and can stand on their own. The mood is uniformly dark, thus making the CD excellent for cruising around at night. It's not simply mood music though - the tracks are generally interesting. Night Beat and Stress are the standouts in my opinion. The ambience is incredible.
If you're looking for more of the Daft Punk sound, this is probably not going to be interesting. However, if you enjoy minimal electronic music done creatively, this is worth your time.

Moody and Broody, January 31, 2005
This review is from: Irreversible (Score) (Audio CD)
The soundtrack for Irreversible created by Thomas Bangalter is a serious, moody and broody piece of work. My wife finds it disturbing to listen to and it creeps her out, however I find to be beautiful and mysterious because the music conveys a sense of the unknown. Thomas Bangalter is a one of kind musician, however if a comparison is needed then I say his music sounds like as if Moby and Nine Inch Nails collaborated together to create this excellent soundtrack from an excellent film.
