The film adaptation of Irvine Welsh's "Trainspotting," by future Oscar winner Danny Boyle, is as near-perfect as you're likely to get in interpreting the frenetic works (and world) of the Scottish novelist. "Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy" obviously wants you to keep the author's reputation foremost in your thoughts as his name is actually a part of the title. Adapted from the short "The Undefeated" in Welsh's 1996 collection "Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance," this is a movie that both benefits from Welsh's name and is harmed by it. I had looked forward to seeing director Rob Heydon's interpretation of "Ecstasy" since its premiere in 2011. I had heard many divisive comments prior to seeing the film. Those familiar with Welsh's piece seemed largely dissatisfied and destroyed the movie while those unfamiliar with Welsh seemed a bit more effusive in their praise. I kept an open mind, however, and my reaction skirts the middle ground. The movie, in my estimation, is a perfectly reasonably entertainment. It is neither a disaster or a masterpiece on its own terms as a film. It is not, however, something that I'm likely to revisit with frequency on DVD (as I have Trainspotting).

The movie is centered around the drug fueled antics of low level Scottish dealers. Lloyd (Adam Sinclair) is the kingpin in a group of friends who see life as a series of scores, hook-ups, and dance parties. Despite being a drug runner (hey, it's just Ecstasy), Lloyd is depicted as a good guy that has simply fallen into some bad choices. However, this bad boy just might find salvation in the loving arms of Kristin Kreuk (TV's Smallville and Beauty and the Beast). And why not? This perfectly respectable girl seems to fall instantly in love with a lowlife she meets while high.

Though I have read this movie was trying to be another "Trainspotting" is that such a bad thing? I spent under $10 for the DVD and loved it. Well worth the $. the film captured the era pretty well and kept my interest and that says a lot as I am ADD like everyone in this modern world.
