5.0 out of 5 stars The detailed portrait of extraordinary musician and educator, February 7, 2006
This review is from: Irving Fine: An American Composer in His Time (Lives in Music) (Hardcover)
The latest of the "Lives in Music" series, Irving Fine: An American Composer In His Time is the detailed portrait of extraordinary musician and educator Irving Fine (1914-1962). Covering Fine's early life, his accomplishments as a composer and pianist, his brief teaching career at his alma mater Harvard University, his encounters with veiled anti- semitism, his subsequent success at Brandeis University, and much more. Pulitzer prize-winning composer Richard Wernick provides a foreword describing the growth and change of Fine's compositional style and aesthetic; while author and composer Phillip Ramey draws heavily upon the testimony of those who knew Fine best to craft an eminently readable and insightful study of a creative genius.
