Vise-grip products are pretty sturdy and can take a lot of abuse. The sheet-metal tool is no exception. It not only will clamp and hold a wider surface area than other grips, you can use it to get a nice, crisp fold in a variety of metals. Sheets that are longer than the jaw of the tool are not a problem--you can just move the tool along and there is no buckle or fold between the placements.
I'm a tinsmith, and I use this tool pretty regularly. There are more expensive such tools around, with compound action, etc., but unless you use such a tool professionally and/or on extremely heavy-duty material, this is the best bang for the buck. And, once you have one, you'll wonder how you went so long without it.

In all fairness

1. The jaws are indeed bowed - on purpose. Since the jaws are relatively thin (as compared to a bench vise), they can flex slightly when clamped. This has the effect of reducing the clamping force at outer corners of flat jaws. To compensate, the jaws are bowed slightly to preload them when clamped. So when the jaws are clamped, the bow flattens out to create 100% contact with the workpiece. You can see the same thing at work in big semi-trailers, especially the open flat beds. When empty, the trailer arches noticibly upward, but the arch flattens out when loaded with cargo.

2. Newell Rubbermaid did indeed close the DeWitt, OK plant, and American jobs were lost, but the operations are now in Taiwan, which not exactly China (especially in the minds of the Taiwanese). In reality, mainland China can produce products of very high quality - when contracted and paid to do so. The Taiwanese can and usually do even better - look up semiconductor giant TSMC. Ultimately the sad truth is that chintzy tools can be made anywhere in the world.

3. Having used vise-grips of all kinds for almost 50 years, I frankly don't see any difference in quality between those made in the US and those made in Taiwan. The Vise-Grip brand still counts for better quality than the knock-offs. None of them are precision tools - they're just four link pliers that lock. But like duct tape, vise grips fill a niche well enough that both have become icons.

So bottom line, I give them four out of five stars - say an 85%, which is a "B" grade. Accordingly they will handle 85% of the work thrown at them.

I've purchased several of these tools over the years (when they were still being made in the U.S.), and have loved their versatility. You can use them for thousands of odd clamping tasks. However production has now been moved to Taiwan and quality has apparently suffered. The tool I received had a warped and curved upper jaw plate. While it was still useful for very forceful clamping of steel parts, it threatened to mar softer work and was useless for lighter clamping, which is primarily what I use it for. I returned it to Amazon for a replacement under their wonderful return policy. A few days later I received a replacement which had BOTH jaw plates warped and curved. Disgusted, I returned the tool for a refund. I have now added Irwin/Vise-Grip to a growing list of manufacturers (Craftsman, Klein, Channellock, Nicholson) whose tools should not be purchased without a close and complete inspection. I e-mailed Irwin about my experience but don't expect any response or meaningful changes to their quality control.

Good price, good product, fine service, what else is there?
Only "issue" is the flat area has a bit of a bow; clamps the outside edges without clamping the center of .040 or thinner materials.

I bought this locking pliers specifically to clamp the sole back onto a hiking boot. I glued and then was able to grab the end of the boot sole and clamp it until it dried. Perfect. Just like it was made for that purpose.
The tool itself is worth just about as much as I paid for it.

Don't bother with the cheap "Harbor Freight" Quality pliers they are worth exactly what you pay for them. I use these pliers professionally and they are the best I have found. These are replacements for a pair I wore out after five years of almost daily use. the old ones are still useable just are not as precise as I need them to be so now they will be my back ups. Spend the extra few dollars on these you wont be disappointed.
