3.0 out of 5 stars Can work but not easily!
These are good for tough projects that can take a pounding. Not very useful for more delicate projects. You really need to hammer these in, so that they can bite. I'll keep em' but they are definitly only for rough projects

These are nice. Note that the photo is from the "old style" box
(the new style box is three rows of extractors). Near as I can tell,
these are identical to the set sold by Snap-On for about $100.

The flutes are *sharp* (which is good to get a good grip without expanding
the hole). I did a quick test and a gentle tap with the end of a
screwdriver was all that was needed to get these to "grab".

Now, no extractor can remove a bolt that's so corroded that the head
shears off when you try to turn it, but for situations where the bolt
head "died" or broke off because you turned it too far, or for pipe
nipples and other tubes that have no exterior wrenching surface, these are the
perfect tool.

Note that these are relatively short, so if the bolt/nipple is more than
1/4" below the surface, these might be too short and you may need to use
a numbered spiral remover, but these have more grip because they have
many more splines than a spiral remover.

You can also use these to remove allen and Torx screws that have had their
sockets chewed away.

These extractors are great for removing broken pipe and broken bolts. When using them on high grade bolts, they wont last very long but my work replaces the tools that I damage, I have not snapped one off yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent product, April 13, 2011

I had a stripped recessed bolt (allen key type) with a good amount of rust in my bicycle. I went to Sears and could find nothing that would work, most extraction kits require a drill, which would not fit into the tight spot I needed. I ordered these, and I took out the bolt in 5 minutes. A truly fantastic product. Simple, yet extremely effective. Each piece is ~1 inch long, and you can crank it with a standard ratchet wrench or crescent wrench (the lower sizes are sized for a 13 mm). This allows fitting into small places. Each piece is clearly well made with an aggressive reverse thread. Find the piece that fits into the bolt requiring extraction, give it a slight tap into place, and manually crank with a wrench. For stripped external heads you will need to drill a hole into the bolt first. This kit does not contain any drill bits for such pilot holes.
