I found many problems with the unique adjustable jaw mechanism:

The way you tighten the wrench is by squeezing the jaws together. Only the lower jaw moves so you can just push there. The problem with this mechanism is if you are working in tight spaces, it can be difficult if not impossible to get your fingers in the same space as the jaw to push it tight. Often times, the wrench will slip as you are trying to squeeze your fingers in there which leads to a frustrating experience. Another inconvenience is you will usually need both hands - one to hold the wrench in position and the other to push the jaws tight.

If you think you can just adjust the jaw before you start wrenching, this doesn't work well either. It is easy to push the jaws too hard together and accidentally click more than once which leads to the next problem - you can't click it wider. You must open the release valve which will cause the jaw to freely slide open. So if you make it one click too tight, you have to start over. There is an increment guide on the head but it is hard to see in low light or dirty situations and it's not natural to memorize where you are on the guide before you start adjusting.

Even if you have enough room to squeeze the jaws together, it is not possible to make fine adjustments. The jaw only locks with each click and sometimes you want half a click to really get that tight fit. The clicks are in 1/16 inch increments which is small but doesn't allow that really tight fit you sometimes want.

Overall, the jaw mechanism is simply not practical in many real world situations.

On the plus side, the build quality is excellent and the rubber grip is solid.

This wrench is probably fine if you don't plan on working in tight spaces and don't need to make fine adjustments. Otherwise, you'll have to keep a 2nd standard wrench on hand for those occasions. Thus, this wrench does not make for a good all-purpose tool.

I hate the design of a regular adjustable wrench, even if you own a brand name of this wrench (Craftsman, Cobalt, Husky, etc); it is frustrating to use them because you have to constantly adjust the jaws.

Irwin claims that this wrench design gives you the precision of an open-end wrench and I believe it is a true statement. With the Irwin wrench, you adjust the jaws and they don't wobble as the regular design does.

I like this Irwin design so much that I own 4 wrenches: 8" SAE, 8" Metric, 12" SAE and 12" Metric. I carry the two 8-in wrenches in my car as an emergency tool bag and the other two I keep them at home.

I cannot comment about durability, I haven't used them long enough but they are well made and I trust they will last a life time.

Pros:
Adjustable wrench that really works
Well made.

Cons:
They are expensive if you buy them at retail price.
The SAE wrench cannot be used on metric nuts and vice verse, in other words, you need to buy 2 wrenches (Metric and SAE).

Not great design, thought it would be a nice replacement to the standard adjustable but it lacks the flexibility of the old style and is difficult to size the wrench to fit nuts that aren't brand new and shiny.

Not as awesome as it looked so i ended up buying just a regular 6inch adjustable. I'm startign to realise that any sort of quick adjustable is not a really good idea. Still very sturdy tool but not for me.

Irwin has come up with what is truly the best designed adjustable wrench ever. First off fit and finish are superb, justifying its higher price. What really sets it apart is the locking mechanism they have come up with. Little teeth lock the settings in place and with the release of the spring switch you can easily change to another width and it stays put. Also has a quick size adjustment where you fully open the jaws, then squeeze fit to the nut, and presto its set and stays there. No more fumbling with those silly thumb screws that constantly drift off size. Another plus is the rubberized handle that is both comfortable as well as functional with its firm grip. This will definitely be the one you grab to use.
