These bits are made in Brazil, but the quality is more like primitive China. I own a hardware store, and bought a set for an older customer who is not computer saavy. I tried to buy them direct from Irwin, but Amazon was cheaper for the same set. Two months later, he brought back the 1/4" bit. It was not properly centered, and is just unbelievably poor quality. This gentleman is a really good customer, so I ordered an individual bit to replace the POS one. I hope someone was awake in quality control for the new one. I do not recommend this set, but the choices in hand brace wood bits are not many or varied.

These augers aren't in the same league as those that Grandpa bought as a young man. The cutting edges have large burrs, and the cutting edge geometry and reliefs vary bit to bit indicating unstable/inconsistent manufacturing processes. It took a fair amount of time with Dremel and whetstones to make the bits useable for anything other than rough carpentry, and they still don't work as well as antique bits which have been properly cared for. If you do fine traditional woodworking, or are satisfied with nothing less than superior quality tools, this ain't the auger set you want.

I have had several sets of auger bits that only lasted a few uses before becoming so dull they wouldn't drill at all. These bits are great. A little more expensive, but worth it if you use them a lot.

These bits are just junk> I have a set and are impossible to keep sharp. The steel is way too soft for any type of an auger bit. I ended up going on ebay & found a NOS set for $60 that are Irwin & made in America that are , "the Real Deal" . Better quality all around. I would not waste my money again on a set made in Brazil less I was boring holes in Balsa wood>

I grew up using high quality bits in my Dad's shop and have an appreciation for well made, precision tools.

I was excited to find this set, but when I received it, was amazed at the poor attention to detail and the lack of quality control for this set of auger bits, especially when you consider the past reputation of Irwin.

My set showed up poorly finished and had rust on the business end many of the bits. There were stray bits of metal still attached to the center screw portion of about half of the bits and about a third of the bits had rust around the tips. This probably occurred during sharpening, but they should have been dried and coated with a protective coating.

The set comes in an attractive looking fabric roll with a string tie. The inside of the roll is a bit more plastic-y looking, but seems to do an adequate job of protecting the bits.

The biggest issue I have is that many of the bits had a fair amount of rust on the tips, and many still have large burrs that haven't been properly removed and the cutting surfaces are uneven and don't travel through the wood nearly as well as the old-school bits I grew up with. I'll do my best to clean off the rust with a wire brush, but so far, I'm not terribly impressed and won't allow the bits to touch wood I care about until they're pristine and have sharp clean edges.

I did notice that the set was made in Brazil instead of the USA. The Irwin tools I've used in the past were American-made and very high quality. At this price point, I would have expected better of Irwin.

Update: I've given the bits a good workout and they seem to work fine, especially after evening out the cutting surfaces. I really hated giving these a less than 5-star review, but they fell short of what they should have been. I initially gave the set two stars, but changed it to three stars once I'd cleaned them up to my satisfaction.

These were to replace a 15-year old set of Irwin auger bits. My last set were old, some pretty dull, but they lasted quite some time and overall impressed me. This new set looks nearly identical to my old set, also made in Brazil, except with a nicer roll-out canvas case.

I was impressed until I took a closer look at the bits... first thing noticeable was the rust on the tang and shank of all the bits. Several of the bits had rust running all the way up to the feed screw. The edge on the spurs was very, very thin... so thin that I doubt I'd have a good edge after only a couple of uses. The spurs were also curled over and chipped, while the cutting edges were jagged and chipped.

I tested the 1" bit on a piece of treated 6x6... it bore through quickly as the tips are still sharp, however the hole was anything but smooth. The spurs are so thin, if you were to catch a nail or staple, they'd most likely snap right off at the base.

I then tried drilling a hole with the 1/2" bit, but found it wobbled a bit. I checked to see if it was seated properly and tried again, but it still wobbled.

My 15-year old set looked perfect when I first bought it and after years of use, looks quite worn out with a few chips and a bit of rust... the tips on this new set looked similar, if not worse, the day I received them. I've got numerous Irwin tools and bits, and these bits are an absolute shock... I've never seen such poor quality from Irwin before.

Included pictures are of this set the day I received them, before their first use.
