Editorial Reviews

Review

“Sooner or later most of us must participate in decisions affecting our own or a loved one’s end-of-life care. However sophisticated we may be about the issues, we can all be grateful for the wisdom and practicality of this volume by ethicist-theologian Abigail Rian Evans. Her years as teacher, minister, and scholar have been ably distilled in this vade mecum for a journey all of us must take.”
— Edmund D. Pellegrino, M.D.
Georgetown University Medical Center

“Abigail Rian Evans brings to the narrative of this book several decades of learning, listening, and reflecting. She guides the reader through some complex theological geography. The book is carefully researched and well organized, and the reader can be assured of wisdom as Evans breaks open scripture and tradition so that the pastor can offer a distinctive Christian presence. This book is a model of how to think and respond theologically. I hope it will be widely read and used.”
— Canon James Woodward
College of St. George, Windsor Castle

“As interesting as it is insightful, Is God Still at the Bedside? confronts the difficult questions at the edge of life head-on, employing a broad range of angles and approaches to explore its challenging subject matter. Evans’s faith-filled, commonsense study will be useful to doctors, nurses, pastors, and anyone else called to minister medically or spiritually to the bodies and souls of the dying.”
— Harold G. Koenig, M.D.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, God Is still at the bedside! February 23, 2011
Format:Paperback
There's a wisdom born of experience and caring present in this book. As a professor of practical theology and Presbyterian minister, Abigail Rian Evans offers a balanced, detailed treatment on the complex issues surrounding death and dying, issues pressing in on every person and every family. Valuable information abounds, from organ donation, to how to grieve, hospice care, and national and local resources for handling end-of-life concerns.

For pastors, the challenge is to integrate the personal and professional more effectively in the service of dying individuals and their families. Unlike physicians and psychologists, pastors can develop depth relationships with parishioners over the lifespan. This potential requires a pastor's willingness to grow in psychospiritual maturity, able to reach out to those who are suffering with confident humility, as opposed to prefabricated platitudes.

I especially appreciate the Christian emphasis on how death is conquered through Jesus Christ; indeed, how through Christ, death loses its horror. A funeral service, Evans suggests, is better described as a witness to Jesus' resurrection, and God's redemptive power over death. -- Dan Montgomery, Ph.D., Psychologist, author of "Christian Counseling That Really Works."
