This book is absolutely fantastic! I consider myself pretty health-conscious and wary of what changes to expect while aging, but I still learned how much I didn't know by reading this book. Not to mention that it is written in such an engaging style! This comes as no surprise, since the author is the medical expert at Discovery Channel. The book is both educational AND entertaining!

PROS:
- Excellent breadth of topics (sleep, memory, hearing, metabolism, mental health, sexual health, etc.)
- Engaging and entertaining style of writing keeps your attention
- True/False quizzes at the beginning of every chapter challenge what you think you already know
- Helpful images and case studies really make the points clear
- The resources section for further reading is worth the price of the book alone

CONS:
- I just wish it were longer!

This is a good, solid overview of the changes that the human body goes through as it ages. Written by an internist who is the chief medical expert for the Discovery channel, it presents in clear terms and plain language both what is normal for the aging body and what is not.

Dr. Whyte explains how the different body systems work, what happens as they get older, and what we can do about it. He covers all the body systems: the skin and hair, the digestive system, metabolism, eye problems, memory, hearing, pain, sex and mental health. There questionnaires to help you determine if you have a problem or not. Sidebars provide case histories as examples.

If you know a lot about the human body- say, you live on the Web MD site- you might not get that much from this book. The average reader, however, will get a huge insight into how the human body works and how it ages.

This book is a must read for everyone who hopes to age gracefully someday and a great roadmap for everyone who cares about someone who has already embarked upon that complicated journey.
Dr. Whyte engagingly presents important information with a charming humor that defuses potential anxiety and dispels common misperceptions about the aging process.
This book is a terrific source of accurate and comprehensive information, delivered in such an engaging way it turns medical information into a fun read.

Hopefully this insightful book by Dr. John Whyte will not be his last! I ordered it on Kindle initially, then purchased a hardcopy for a friend, and another, and another. To date I have given this wonderfully crafted , yet entertaining guide to 10 friends and family. It's the perfect gift for anyone you care about, and sure to be a hit with them. After all, who hasn't questioned "Is this normal?" when it comes to the aging process. While one gift recipient was fixated on the expert information regarding changes in their sleeping pattern, another expressed gratitude for the chapter on sexuality and aging --- not an easy topic for many people to openly discuss. The true beauty of the book "Is This Normal" is Dr. Whyte's ability to educate the reader with cutting edge information sprinkled with a liberal dose of light-hearted humor. Reduce your gift-giving stress: order this wonderful read for everyone you know and be their "health hero"! If your loved ones are anything like mine -- they will repeatedly thank you for it.

Just finished reading it, and it is truly an essential guide. I'm a doctor myself, and there were countless tid-bits of knowledge, and eye-opening "WOW's" that make this worth every penny, and every minute I spent reading! From cover to cover, it is consistently educating and entertaining for the reader. As a resident physician, I have already recommended this book myself to middle-agers who frequently wonder about the changes their body and mind go through as they age. Again, I feel it's a great read and a must have!

I love this book ~ not only is it very informative but it's also fun and engaging to read. As a woman who is quickly approaching the BIG 4-0, I could either relate to directly or often wondered about the questions that Dr. Whyte addresses. As I was reading the book my father who is 75 asked if he could see it - after flipping through the chapters he asked if he could borrow it when I was finished, so it's a great book for many ages! If you decide to read it cover to cover or just scroll through and read what pertains to you, it is a well written and interesting book...two thumbs up!

Perhaps my sene of humor is skewed, but I found "Is This Normal?" not only informative, but amusing, as well. I plan, when I can tolerate parting with the book, to donate it to the wonderful library in White Acres, the retirement village where I now reside. Mollie F. Howard El Paso TX

This is a wonderful book to read and keep handy re: changes that occur as we age and whether or not it is normal. The material is accurate and easy to understand. Dr. Whyte presents basic information re: what is and is not normal as we age, what is happening to cause the change, simple drawings on the anatomy of the system involved, ways to prevent or correct common problems and when a change requires seeking medical advice from your doctor. The chapters start with several common beliefs and/or misconceptions about changes occuring as we age and the answers are found at the end of the chapter. Dr. Whyte is the chief medical consultant for the Discovery Channel and Dr. Ornish is an authority on cardiovascular health and preventive medicine. I highly recommend this book--it is a good investment in knowing how to take care of yourself as you age.
