Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6–Created as a companion to The Care & Keeping of YOU (American Girl, 2009), this set of questions and answers has been adapted from American Girl magazine's column. Topics range from body hair and shaving to menstruation and breast development to talking to a trusted adult about puberty. While the advice covers familiar ground, the tone of the book is comforting. After reading what the experts say, there is commentary from real girls as well. The colorful cartoon illustrations mirror the style of the text.–Elaine Baran Black, Georgia Public Library Service, Atlanta

Highly recommended for every young lady to read!

Also, she was able to start talking to me about the easier topics, like hair, and then ease into the more difficult topics, like periods.
J. Randall
She said the advice is very practical and informative.

Just as with the other American Girl books, I have found this one to be a great resource for my 9 year old daughter who came to me asking questions about her body, her period and other things she has begun to hear about from other girls. After talking to her, I discovered this book. She read it cover to cover several times, telling me how much she appreciated it. It caused us to have more dialogue about puberty and the changes she'll undertake, and I know it has helped her be less afraid of the unknown. She is now 10 and has gone back to re-read parts of this book (and The Care and Keeping of You) many, many times. She may never face all the issues in the book (i.e. friend with body odor), but she realizes that she isn't the only girl out there thinking about these things and wanting to know answers.

I feel like my daughter gains more confidence and self-esteem as she realized she is not the only one with unanswered questions. I believe it has a good impact for her to hear others confirm what I had been telling her all along. I highly recommend it to other moms.

Our 10, now 11 year old daughter enjoys this book. It gives her the privacy to ask questions when she's feeling shy about asking Mom.

My daughter is 10 and this book was useful to her and what she should expect in the next couple years. It did not go into anything I was uncomfortable with.

I love how this book was a combination of fun and more difficult subjects. I think it made my daughter less nervous about reading it. Also, she was able to start talking to me about the easier topics, like hair, and then ease into the more difficult topics, like periods. It was done in a fun, modern, and easy to read way. However, from what I saw, it doesn't give the basic information like what a period is and why, so be prepared for a little conversation first, and perhaps a supplement book to help explain it.

...but beware of giving it directly to your daughters. How to approach a friend with body odor is helpful, but if there isn't a problem like that why point it out? Best to read the book as a parent and reference it when sticky issues arise.

I chose this book for my daughter because she enjoyed the first one I gave her when she was 9; The Care & Keeping of You for younger girls as well as The Care & Keeping of You 2. She said the advice is very practical and informative. All American Girl books are awesome in her opinion and she says she feels more prepared for puberty when it come down the road. I wanted her to have the information now before it starts.
