This isn't complicated stuff - yet being overwhelmed with clutter can make you feel like an idiot.

My father-in-law's death this past year really woke me up to the fact that so many of us have more possessions than we need and we're asleep at the wheel about it. As my husband and I assist my mother-in-law in the process of taking the time to go through her home and sort through things in the face of her loss, I've really been looking at my own home and seeing how much I've fallen asleep at that wheel myself.

I was at one of my favorite networking meetings recently and had the good fortune to hear the author speak about this book. She's been staging houses for over 20 years and she had some great stories to tell about what it takes to pare down the possessions in your house to sell it - leaving just enough out to inspire the potential buyer to see themselves (and their possessions) in your home.

I was blown away by her straightforward ideas and playful manner; clearly she loves what she does and she's poured all that delight and knowledge into this book. I grabbed one immediately and never looked back. What a treasure ~ and in the midst of all the emotion of going through your own belongings as well as the belongings of a parent who's died, it's been great fun to go through Sharon's lighthearted book. It packs a huge wallop.

Cleaning up your stuff is not that much fun for me ~ there are lots more exciting things I'd rather be doing.

Sharon makes the process FUN. Her book is engaging and easy to read, with chapters like: The Earthquake Survivor's Tale (must be read to be believed!), Aunt Martha's Afghan and other Handmade Gifts (too funny) and my all time favorite: Live Like You're On Vacation (so true). She addresses everything that we STUFF our homes with, including plants (It's a Jungle...

I loved your concept of a house being overweight. I look at your wonderful "Before & After" photos for inspiration. I weigh less now and my house also weighs less. Thanks so much for the ideas and inspiration!

This book is well-written, informative and fun to read. It manages to put a light-hearted spin on the stressful and unpleasant task of getting your house and all its "stuff" under control. The three fictional characters were both clever and highly entertaining, and provided a fresh perspective on a tedious subject. And unlike a previous reviewer, I felt the photos and illustrations added a lot. The old adage "A picture is worth a thousand words" certainly applies here; nothing is as helpful as a good old "before and after" shot. They also do a great job of breaking the book into easy-to-read segments. It's not just page after page of mind-numbing text.

The cleaning tips were also especially helpful. I'm always looking to save a buck on cleaning products; and any advice on ways to streamline my cleaning routine is a huge bonus.

I highly recommend this book. In fact I liked it so much that I bought five copies as gifts!

This book is a pretty quick read as there are a lot of picture and illustrations. I was looking for more of a how-to-declutter book which is what I thought this book would be based on the title. This, to me, seemed like it would be a useful book for how to stage your home...remove personal photos, pack up small knick-knacks, clear countertops, remove excess furniture, and hide the toilet brush and waste baskets, etc. She also lists the "bare minimum" which should be in each type of room in order to make it functional, which I did find useful. But if you actually live in your home, would like there to be seating for all of your family members in each room, would like a place for your dog to lie down, and would like to display your children's art work and photos this isn't the book for you in my opinion.

I found out the blessing of repurposing my possessions, and living in an uncluttered home. This book is fun to read, and the directions are easy to follow. Sharon suggests you do these exercises with a friend. My husband was so impressed that he helped me tackle the basement. Finding out how to clean with "green" products that are already in most homes is a real bonus. I really think you will enjoy this book, and you will find it to be a resource you continue to use.

I don't often write reviews, but I wanted to prevent someone else from making the same mistake I did. If you are looking for a frivolous, "coffee table" book, without much content, this may be the book for you. If you are looking for the "diet trick" to reduce the "weight" of your house, don't even waste your time and money! (Both were stated in the description.) I am not the toughest critic to please, and I am VERY busy, so for me to complain, definitely should give you caution for this purchase.

First, I think the author meant well, but I have to wonder if she has ever researched other clutter reduction books. If she did, she would understand that this book is not about reducing clutter, it IS clutter, or will become clutter for you very quickly. I have read a fair amount of clutter reduction books, but am occasionally watching for new ones that give me a fresh, new motivation to keep it up. There was absolutely nothing new in this book; in fact, it had very little helpful content at all. Of the 184 pages, at least 1/3 to a 1/2 of them were cartoon-like illustrations from the 50s. Even in her "before/after" pics, I found a few of the "before" pics to be somewhat, well-organized rooms (not all of them). The "after" pics depicted museums and not "real" homes. In other words, clean up the shoes on the floor, remove a few flower vases, and close the TV cabinet and Voila!, it is all organized (I'm not kidding!). Organizer Lorie Marrero actually cautions us to not be worried about perfection, and the author's after pics aimed for that. The "characters" in her book were not current or relevant in any way. I love historical characters, but the stereotypes of these 3 bordered on insensitive and unrealistic.
