Lianne La Havas - Is Your Love Big Enough?

Biography

One night last October, Lianne La Havas’ life changed on a dime. The 22-year-old London-born singer, songwriter, and guitarist had been asked to appear on the influential British music show Later… with Jools Holland (a rare invitation for an unknown artist), and she made sure to take advantage of her moment. Cutting a striking figure in a white pleated skirt and side-swept poof of ... Read more in Amazon's Lianne La Havas Store

Editorial Reviews

Since her appearance on the BBC's "Later ... with Jools Holland" in the fall of 2011, the excitement around Lianne has quickly spread across the UK, Europe and the US. Appearing on that same episode of "Later ..." was Bon Iver, which quickly led to an offer for Lianne to open their December North American tour. "As soon as we saw her play it was so refreshing; somebody who could play their instrument, somebody who could use their voice, but in their own way. She is just fantastic," Bon Iver's Justin Vernon told Esquire (UK).

La Havas says that Is Your Love Big Enough? "acts almost like a map of the route I have taken through life, through love, in the past three years. The title is a question that mixes challenge, defiance, impatience, determination, pride, and, above all, passion. It demands an answer."

Lianne La Havas is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from the UK and her debut CD "Is Your Love Big Enough?" sounds just as lovely as her name. It's a blend of Soul, Jazz, and Folk, acting as a perfect backdrop to her feathery vocals which recall Erykah Badu or even Amel Larreux.

The album opens "Don't Wake Me Up" opening with a wall of multi-layered vocals before morphing into a spacey guitar-driven ballad. The title track is a guitar/hand clap-driven affair, while "Lost & Found" is a piano ballad with quivery emotive vocals which would do Adele proud, as would the spare piano ballad "Gone". "Au Cinema" is a soft ballad with twitchy sounding guitar, while "No Room For Doubt" is a tender duet with Willy Mason. "Forget" features skittery percussion and the angry lyrics "Waste all your time writing love songs, but you don't love me", while the unfussy acoustic "Age" is a spare Jazzy/Bluesy piece.

Every song stands out really; "Elusive" is a groovy ballad, "Everything Everything" is a lush Jazzy shuffle, "Tease Me" is an acoustic ballad, and closing is the catchy sunny "They Could Be Wrong", jangly Indie Pop with Havas tenderly teasing and caressing with her voice.

The album has already debuted at #4 in her native UK. Glad to see that good music can still find an audience sometimes. This album is an absolute delight!!

She can belt it out, and she can be soft and breathy. She uses a wide variety of voice qualities in her debut album. The musical arrangements are often polyrhythmic in this genre-crossing album that reflects the diverse musical influences of her childhood.

I learned of this album from a review on National Public Radio, so prospective purchasers might want to visit the NPR website to get another perspective on this artist and her first album.

Amazing voice, arrangement, smooth and unusual transitions. Intellectual and stimulating! Not the same old mindless pop stuff. I love it!

The British singer Lianne has such a beautiful, silky voice. Very special and for me hard to compare to anyone else. It took me 2 to 3 times listening before I really liked the CD. It's not everyone's taste. Actually it takes me back to the beginning of the 70th. Very nice lyrics! Almost like poetry.

WOW! was my reaction after listening to this the first time. I've gotten into a very bad habit of buying cds & putting them on my mp3 player without listening to them first so I never know what to expect of new artists. However each time one of these tracks played, I found myself smiling because it was so good & also pulling out the player so that I could check for the artist. Finally I listened to the entire album in one sitting and fell in love with it.

Lianne is a singer/songwriter whose lyrics are way beyond a 22 yr old, her vocal style is unique - smoky, airy and reminiscent of Sade on certain tracks while on others she displays strong, confident more powerful vocals. The album is also well constructed with excellent song placement and enough tempo changes so that I was never bored. I love that she is confident in her own style and didn't chase trends in order to make her music fit in with what's hot right now. These are the type of songs I'll listen to over & over and will probably reach for this album when I'm a senior citizen because they touched my heart and made me feel something.

Honestly the only 2 songs that I like but don't love are: FORGET & TEASE ME. The songs that I flipped over and keep pressing the repeat button on are: EVERYTHING EVERYTHING, DON'T WAKE ME UP, ELUSIVE, LOST & FOUND, GONE, NO ROOM FOR DOUBT & THEY COULD BE WRONG.

I hope she gets more chances to perfom in the US so that more people can be introduced to her music.

This is a pretty talented woman! She has a GREAT voice and some seriously wonderful words to impart. The music is eclectic enough to keep you wondering, upon first listen, where she may go next. I have been TRYING not to listen to this on a continuous loop and failing quite happily....This CD is more than worth buying.
