The volume seems fine under normal conditions.

No it's really low you can hardly hear it without headphones, and with headphones it's worse - not a sturdy machine.

Volume is good for us. We played movies on a 6-hour road trip and heard them great!

I use this DVD player to do my daily aerobic workout in my basement. I have the volume up to the max and I can hear it fine in my large basement room. I really don't need to be watching the video constantly, and only need the audio to guide my workouts, so I think the volume is fine. If I was watching a video, I guess I'd be sitting closer to the DVD player, and would not need the volume up so much. It does not play very LOUD like a TV, but it's small, and so loud volume isn't necessary. The sound is clear and is good. I hope this answers your question.

On a scale of 1-5, I rate the volume a 3. But, external speakers can be plugged in to the unit.
