About the Author

Jennifer Fosberry first visited the Statue of Liberty as a child with her Girl Scout troop and climbed to the top of El Castillo on her honeymoon. She has waved to Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower on her way to Rome and glanced toward the Great Wall of China from Taiwan. And while the Great Pyramids are still a mystery she hopes to discover one day, she is always comfortable at home. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, three children, and a little dog that keeps her company while she works on her next book.

Mike Litwin combines a variety of media to create scenes that serve the imagination and education of children. A graduate of the East Carolina University School of Art and Design, he plays both designer and illustrator with an often wacky, always delightful style that uniquely blends playful innocence with devilish mischief. Illustrating and telling stories for children is his passion, his entertainment, and his dream. He currently lives in Greenville, North Carolina, with his wife and three daughters.

More About the Author

Jennifer Fosberry is a science geek turned children' book writer. After working in the high tech industry in Silicon Valley and running away to Costa Rica for a few years, she returned to the San Francisco Bay area to read, write, and try to get out of housework. She lives with her husband and three children and her little dog, too.

I read this book with my kids and they really enjoyed it, both the cute story and the wonderful illustrations.

I love Isabella's imagination and how she travels the world in her own back yard, for instance her fence become the Great Wall of China, and her sandbox the desert and pyramids in Egypt. At the end of the book, there is an information section where each of these places is described, and there are and web sites to look up. This is a great connection to have.

There is a nice structure to the book, the kind that kids love, where Isabella is in one place, her dad starts to play along, then she goes to another place. The story gets that predictable, unpredictable feel, where it is predictable that she will fool her father, but unpredictable where she will go next.

The illustrations are engaging, simple and colourful, the kind that really draw young readers in, transforming Isabella's back yard into the landmark places around the world.

This is a fun book that kids are sure to want to read over and over again - and it might even get them interested in explorations of their own.

Format: Hardcover
Isabella's grand imagination makes for an incredibly engaging story that will take readers all over the world. With each occupation Isabella pretends she has, it takes her to some where new. From being a Warrior and protecting her people at the Great Wall of China to being an Archeologist and searching the pyramids, to pretending to be an astronomer atop a Mayan temple, Isabella's vast imagination teaches children about various occupations while giving them a taste of various places around the world were these jobs can be found.

The way in which this story is told is brilliant. While she's outside playing, Isabella's father asks her to help with a project, to which she replies she can't, because she's not that certain occupation. For example, her father says,

"Then who is going to help me today?" asked the father.

"I am an Archeologist, searching the hottest, driest desert for the tomb of a king."

"Well, Isabella, I think you will discover that your mummy gave us plenty to do today."

I loved the fact that one, Isabella's father plays a big role in the story, and two, he allows her to pretend to be whomever she wants. While he continues with his various projects outside, he continues to engage with her and her imagination, and supports her in allowing her to play and pretend. I loved it. The cutest part of the entire story was of course at the end of the book after Isabella has traveled all over the world, she walks hand in hand with her dad into the house and tells him what her favorite place. I'm thrilled that a father/daughter relationship was explored like this one was.

I loved this book and I highly recommend picking it! Not only is the story adorable, the illustrations are fabulous and match this story perfectly.

I bought this author's books for myself and my granddaughter's teacher as a gift for end of the year. She has 2 other stories by this same author. I have read these books to my granddaughter whose name is Isabella. I like the little girl going around the world to famous places. At the end of the book, the author gives info on the places.

I first saw this at a local book store. I liked the illustrations and the different countries she traveled too. My granddaughter (age 5) didn't like it as much as grandma did.
