This movie is great fun. I'm usually not too fond of Bollywood comedies, but this one is quite unique. It actually makes fun of a seriously dark subject. The clashing of the caste.

The one thing that seems to keep poverty alive and well in India is their stupid caste system. The rich only socialize with the rich, and the poor must stay together AWAY from the rich. From the day they are born, the poor are made to understand that they are worthless, and the rich can knock them to the ground and kick them in the street and still be within their rights of the elite caste that they are. Even the police are made to understand that they must cater to the rich.

Now, this movie "Ishq", is a story of the clash of the caste. Although it starts off as a comedy, I believe that the writer and director wanted to shock the audience as it carries out the devious intentions of the rich fathers. The first half is this movie, is generally teenage oriented comedy. The second half is a dark serious evil series of events, with a great tear-shedding conclusion.

Here's the story: Two guys are best of friends for many years. The rich kid (Ajay Devgan), and the poor kid (Aamir Khan), They meet two girls who are best of friends. The rich girl (Juhi Chawla), and the poor girl (Kajol).

These two guys are anxious to get to know these girls, all the miscommunications and failed get togethers make up for all the comedy that starts off the first half of this film. The rich guy falls in love with the poor girl. And the aggressively pleasant and confident poor guy, is in love with the rich girl.

This movie begins really crazy, it's loud and there is lots of yelling and slapstick comedy, but as it progresses it is much more melodramatic. As in many Bollywood films, just when you think things can't get much worse, it does, the plot has more twists and turns than a mountain road!
It is great to see these wonderful actors together in one movie, they are all terrific. If you like Bollywood movies, this is a must see, but I won't spoil it by telling you the ending!

I see 3 other reviewers really enthused with this one. I didn't have that experience. I like the actors but the extended comedy wasnt to my taste. It was doing the 'wacky', hammy angle Indian Bollywood comedy lovers love. I like more subtlety in my humour.
It is aging too (it looks older than 1997). Now I can live with this if the plot redeems it (and I have liked other Aamir Khan offerings of this period) but I found myself all too aware of the dodgy movie colour and the echoing in the audio track.
My 28 year old co-enthusiast of Bollywoods abandoned it earlier than me. I resolutely held in there because of the cast but this one didn't do it for me.
A quick Net surf shows it is often rated about 5-7 out of 10 elsewhere. So be aware there can be a range of reactions to it.
