This review is from: Islam and Romantic Orientalism: Literary Encounters with the Orient (Paperback)
This book can be seen as a Post-Saidian reading of Orientalism and its ideological significance in the history of East/West relationship. Although, Sharafuddin agrees with the complexity of this relationship, he strongly disagrees with Said's ideological generalization of he discourse of Orientalism, which according to Said committed itself to the Western colonial enterprise. Orientalism, in its romantic manifestation, particularly with Byron, can be read as a positive interaction between the West and Islam. It is a space for exploring themes and issues outside Europe, but its meanings and implications are very reflective and didactic, particularly in criticizing politics and tyranny.
