Editorial Reviews

Product Description

A ninety-minute documentary of stunning breadth and beauty, Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World transports viewers over nine countries and across 1,400 years of cultural history to reveal the astonishing riches of Muslim arts, crafts, and architecture. Exploring distant locations and many rare pieces of art, the film illuminates the history of a global culture, reflecting the Islamic world as it developed over centuries and as it is today.

Review

UPF's Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World is a stunning achievement in documentary film making. It opens a window onto a sight of Islam so often neglected in the west. The aesthetic, beauty, and culture offer an opening for us all to start a dialogue on the values that we share and hold in common. --Karen Armstrong, Award-Winning Author of Religion

Matters of faith continue to divide people in dreadful ways, but there has always been at least one thing that religions have in common the urge to express belief through art. That's a point driven home in a sumptuous 90 minute documentary by Baltimore filmmaker Robert Gardner airing this week on PBS. Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World, narrated by Susan Sarandon, provides a welcome look into a cultural legacy little known and little appreciated in this country. --The Baltimore Sun

Islamic art puts a face on a lot of the uncertainties Western society has about Islamic culture, and also it sheds light on some shared histories between western culture and Islamic culture, and shows a continuity rather than a break --Afshan Bokhari, assistant professor of art history at Suffolk University in Boston, Mass.

I saw this on PBS and had to have it to show my book club. They were as impressed as I was. Education like this is fatal to prejudice.

Finally, an awesome documentary that reveals the beauty and splendor of Islamic art. An approach through theme not chronological...which is wonderful. For my art appreciation students I can give them Four units...especially love the Word and Color sections. If you're looking for more and don't mind re-enactments Cities of Light is also great for looking at the history of Islamic Spain...there is a very interesting section(s) on the Alhambra

The photography is good but the commentary that accompanies it lacks depth and understanding. You won't learn much about Islamic architecture and aesthetics watching this DVD. Rent it (don't buy it ) and judge for yourself.

The Doris Duke Shangri-La exhibit was at our museum and a lecture with a slide show was presented. Also, this movie was shown. The art was beyond impressive and I wanted to add this excellent DVD to my collection.

I find the Islamic art form absolutely beautiful. This program increased both my understanding and appreciation.
