Book Description

0810852640 978-0810852648 March 30, 2006
In the post-9/11 environment, there has been an explosion of interest about things Islamic. While much of the new literature is refreshingly positive, some seems to reflect a revival of the centuries-old, well-embedded misconceptions about the Islamic world. This book is partly a complement to that interest, with coverage relating to the literature that the author accumulated over the last 15-20 years in connection with other research endeavors pertaining to the early Islamic social thought.

This readily accessible compendium of literature on Islamic civilization represents a window to some of the literature pertaining to Islamic history, contributions to knowledge, and the influence of that reservoir once it was assimilated in medieval Europe. It is unique in that it presents more than mere annotations; it is a compendium of "literature briefs"—detailed and focused descriptions—of each of the over 600 books and articles covered. Students, research scholars, and professionals will find this book to be full of useful sources and stimulus for further reading.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is an excellent reference work...Recommended. (Choice, October 2006 )

Covering more than six hundred different books and articles, it is a wonderful, compact, and affordable annotated bibliography for anyone interested in Islamic civilization and its influence on the development of Western thought. The book is thoughtfully organized....a unique and lively read....due to its impressive coverage, thoughtful organization, and scholarly presentation, Islamic Civilization: History, Contributions, and Influence: A Compendium of Literature is highly recommended for any public or academic library... (Reference and User Services Quarterly, Vol. 46, No. 2 )

Ghazanfar has successfully assembled into one concise volume a wealth of resources supporting both general and scholarly inquiry into Islamic contributions to Western culture and knowledge. (Arba, vol. 38 (2007) )

For those who want a wide-ranging literature survey of Muslim culture, S. M. Ghazanfar's Islamic Civilization: History, Contributions, and Influence is a good choice. (College and Research Libraries News, March 2007 )

In order to help relieve the blind spot Westerners have about the importance of Islamic influence in Western culture and society, Ghazanfar (emeritus economics, U. of Idaho) cites and substantially annotates more than 600 English-language books and articles pertaining to Islamic history, contributions to knowledge, and the impact of that knowledge once it was assimilated in medieval Europe. Most of the works were published during the second half of the 20th century. Students at any level, journalists, policy makers, and general readers can find here an entry into further study or just a general overview. (Reference and Research Book News, August 2006 )
