This is the scariest book I have ever read, without exception -- and I've read a lot of distressing books about the current state of the world.

In a very calm, patient tone, the author explains the essential elements of Islamic law and economics in terms that I think will be crystal clear even to someone without too much previous exposure. His presentation is surprisingly even-handed and almost neutral much of the time.

He explains why the concept of an 'apolitical' moderate Islam is theologically and historically impossible, and is based on our ignorant, arrogant attempt to fit a very alien religious and social culture into our familiar worldview -- 'if they were properly educated and economically developed, they'd see that we're right.' Guess what -- that's exactly how they regard us. We think the sexism, repression, authoritarianism, and intolerance in Islamic nations are culturally primitive. They think our tolerance, individuality, egalitarian democracy, and profligacy are culturally decadent.

Please don't let the thickness of the book put you off -- it is very well-written, and divided into little bite-sized pieces, and goes much faster than I thought it would.

Well, except that every few pages I literally have to take a break to catch my breath. It's as if he's taking you by the hand and as you walk slowly towards the woods he's explaining in a kindly tone exactly why you have agreed to be ripped apart by wild dogs -- in such a conversational, informative manner that you only momentarily realize WHAT he's saying. That is, Johnsson thoroughly convinces the reader, exactly how economic jihad is being carried out all around us.

This book is required reading for every citizen. Really.

5.0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book as a must read for everyone, September 13, 2006
This review is from: Islamic Economics and the Final Jihad: The Muslim Brotherhood to the Leftist/Marxist - Islamist Alliance (Paperback)

This is really a remarkable book, as it explains so well the background and current and historical interpretations of Islam. It so clearly presents the factor of economics and that is the strategy which to our country is more damaging then incidents of terrorism. Trying to eliminate the terrorists when all of Islam is and will be focused on the destruction and/or conversion of America and Israel to Islam does seem to be focusing on the wrong part of the problem.

It would be helpful if it could become a best seller, as it is so clear and well documented that it should be a bomb shell, and get people not only informed, but aware of what has been happening. Trying to destroy terrorists is like wiping off ants on your kitchen sink. You never get to the source, and the author's point that if Iraq goes democratic, it does not mean that the totally entrenched rest of the Muslim world would follow. I did wonder when that was expressed early in the decision to go after Iraq. It seemed like an impossible task. I feel you at least have to have a people who believe in the ten commandments and the principal of Christianity to make a true democracy work. At the time I thought maybe it would have an affect, but few of us were in the least bit knowledgeable about Islam and how pervasive Muslims were throughout the world, and how bound they are to what their leaders say as law.( Australia is reported to have made a declaration to its Muslims to leave the country and not try to change the country's customs, religion, and laws, unless they will accept Australia as it is.)

I was very concerned when I read about the economic aspects of Islam and our national vulnerability--especially our apparent ignorance of our leaders.

3.0 out of 5 stars Islamist Oil Cartel concerns, August 2, 2010

This review is from: Islamic Economics and the Final Jihad: The Muslim Brotherhood to the Leftist/Marxist - Islamist Alliance (Paperback)
"Islamic Economics and the Final Jihad: The Muslim Brotherhood to the Leftist/Marxist Islamist Alliance" by David Jonsson (2006), 617 pages, with somewhat larger text than usual - which makes for easy reading. The author claims he became proficient in Islamic law (shariah) through "contract negotiation and extensive business travels in the Middle East. As an elder in a Protestant church his frame of reference offers a Christian and economic perspective." The author claims to have worked in various Islamic countries for over 30 years in the oil industry, including Saudi Arabia, North Africa and Indonesia. The Christian author is concerned that non-Muslims fail to realize that Muslims wish non-Muslims to adopt Islamic economic concepts, such as interest-free loans (and other banking practices) that he details. The author is warns that Islamic economic s `threatens' Western democracy, civilization, and Christianity. Sadly, the author presents a rather disjointed analysis of his contentions; he briefly discusses a topic in one or two paragraphs and then wanders off to discuss other topics, before returning to his original topic. The author will discuss Mawdudi concepts of Islam, then he quotes something from the Bible in refutation, then within a page decides to discuss Pakistan issues, then jumps to denounce Hamas, and all of a sudden within two paragraphs rebuffs Ahmadinejad in Iran - there is a `plot' to the author's reasoning, but you have to connect it for him. It is not that the author is `incorrect' with his thoughts or data, its just that the author should have discussed one topic well, before venturing elsewhere. While reading I felt like grabbing some scissors and tape to bring related paragraphs together. The author contends that "Islamic economics...blends the thesis of communism and capitalism. The Islamic economic system deals primarily with distribution of wealth, and not with the means of production. The main thrust of Islam economics then takes the form of redistribution of wealth" (p. 114). After about the first 100 pages, the author FINALLY begins to explain Islamic economics. The author does a fine job in pointing out the particulars and differences of Musharakah versus Mudarabah, and other financial issues, such as purchasing a home with DIMINISHING Musharakah! The author details how one can buy either a taxi or a car, too. Other financial topics discussed include: salam, ijarah (leasing), financing working capital, profit sharing, zakat, riba & sukuk bonds. While this book is informative, a reader is undoubtedly much better off in consulting any other business book regarding Islamic financial concepts. There is a lot of interesting financial observations here (such as gold trading in Dubai), discussion of the oil cartel (including Russia's Yukus involvement), a brief review of various oil conferences, and is of interest in reviewing the `Big Picture' of the world-wide global oil market (to include South America!). The main text covers 464 pages, with another 45 pages devoted to a "Chronology of World Events", 44 pages of `Glossary of Islamic Concepts', and 50 pages of notes and index. Could have been a much better book.
