Book Description

You will not read a more vital—or more disturbing, or even funnier—book all year than ISLAMOPHILIA

Columnist and broadcaster Douglas Murray, with trademark wit, delivers an alarming analysis behind the events of the past week in the UK, as the country tries to make sense of the barbaric slaughter of British soldier Lee Rigby on the streets of London. In a devastating satire on the climate of fear in the UK today, Murray’s analysis is wildly entertaining yet ultimately profound:

“If absolutely everybody in the world agrees on something – from the President of the United States to most film-stars, pop-stars, Popes, Bishops, atheists, writers, film-makers, brain-boxes and everyone else – then surely they must be right. Well, no. I think they are wrong. Wildly, terribly, embarrassingly and dangerously wrong, “ writes Murray.

ISLAMOPHILIA shows how so many of the celebrities above, have, at some point chosen to abandon any hope or wish to criticize Islam and instead decided to profess some degree of love for it. Love, that Murray points out in the book, is often irrational and certainly misguided: Murray is not afraid to name and shame, and the book’s tour includes novelists Sebastian Faulks and Martin Amis, Boris Johnson, South Park, Tony Blair, Ridley Scott, David Cameron, Liam Neeson, Justin Bieber, Random House Publishers, the BBC, Richard Dawkins, the Prince of Wales and even George Bush. Yes, George Bush.

“They may have done this for a range of good and bad reasons. Some of them have to done it to save other people. Some of them have done it to save themselves. Some of them have done it because they are too stupid to do anything else and others because clever people can be really dumb at times.”

Murray then goes to detail the extraordinary strategic cultural efforts made in recent years to “rewrite the last few millennia of history, minimising and denigrating the impact of actual scientists and promoting the claims of Islamic proselytisers” and he has fighting words for the version of history depicted by Ridley Scott and others in Hollywood.

Artists and writers have been caught off-guard, he alleges, “Having poked at empty hornets nests for so many years they have forgotten the courage required to do the necessary poking at full ones.”

He concludes, “Let’s be clear. For the record I don’t think everybody needs to spend their time being offensive about Islam. Not only is there no need to be offensive all the time, but most Muslims just want to get on with their lives as peacefully and successfully as everybody else. But there is an un-evenness in our societies that needs to be righted…to think that to think that the answer to any criticism of Islam or Muslims is a delegitimizing of critics and an indulgence in self-pity is not to make an advance. It is to pave the way for self-harm. For all of us.

Where people are telling lies about it we should not be fearful to correct them. And where people are fearful – and genuine reasons to be so do keep coming along – people should remind themselves of something. Which is that just as bravery in one person instils bravery in others, so cowardice in one person has a tendency to be catching.”

ISLAMOPHILIA – bravery is catching. Pass it on.

Made available for sale a mere week after the Woolwich terror attack, ISLAMOPHILIA is a stunning example of the kind of fast to market, newspaper-style publishing that Melanie Phillips plans to make a hallmark of her new, cross-Atlantic ebook company - emBooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vive la différence! June 14, 2013

The third best thing about this short book (the first best thing being that it tells the truth and the second being that it's frightening while at the same time entertaining) is that I'm confident that it will not be followed by a retraction, an apology, or a "clarification" which would include a string of fawning or contrite phrases like "profound respect" or "sorry if I have offended" or "what I really meant was" in order for the author to save his own neck. Literally (yes, literally!) and figuratively. Oh, and one more thing--Murray translates "Allahu Akbhar" as "Allah is great" not "God is great" the way so many in the Western media do. It's a shame that it takes an atheist to recognize that there's a difference between Allah and God, but thank God someone does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long overdue!! June 28, 2013

This is a wonderful little book, which contains dozens of examples of Western people cowering before Islam, even when they are not Muslim.

Let us think for a moment: if YOU are an atheist, an agnostic, a Christian, or a Jew &c., then you obviously think that Muhammad was a fraud and Islam is just as fraudulent as Muhammad. If my guess is wrong there, then we still have PLENTY of things to despise in Islam, such as the systematic horrors inflicted on women, the huge incidence of rape, the genital mutilation of women, the complete lack of freedom of thought or speech, the commands to kill "infidels" wherever they may be found.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Islam is the worst religion on earth, and Muslims should be ashamed of themselves.

This book is chock-full of Western airheads who cannot see what is right in front of their noses.

Highest possible recommendation!

(Check back in a few weeks to make sure that Murray's head is still attached to his body, and mine too!) :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold, Funny, and Correct June 12, 2013

In his new book, the neoconservative author Douglas Murray very clearly identifies the reasons why all kinds of people in mainstream culture are cautious about speaking about Islam. This book is quite funny, but also profoundly sad because the criticism that this religion so desperately needs is being avoided out of a combination of cowardice and a misplaced desire to be polite. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Douglas's work or is interested in knowing more about the phenomenon of non-criticism that permeates all discussion of Islam.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally some truth July 18, 2013

This book is funny, timely, and a much needed antidote for what passes as intelligent discussion regarding Islam today. It's a short read, but very worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, True, and Ridiculous July 4, 2013

The author does an excellent job of highlighting some of the most ridiculous things that certain muslim groups complain about. In many ways this is hilarious but also frustrating that we as a society condone their behavior.

The irony, humor, and starkness of this book are just right to execute a critical observation and perspective overlooked by many in today's "polite to a fault" society.

its a timely book which shows how a culture of politeness is considered weakness in the eyes of deluded islamists. and how the western culture approaches islam with a misplaced sense of guilt and fear.
i would have loved if the book also suggested what needs to be done about it by one and all. we can talk about issues at all levels but we also need to talk about possible resolution to these.
