It Works,
By
This review is from: Island Girl Dance Fitness Workout for Beginners: Cardio Hula (DVD)
I bought this DVD after working out to the Hula Workout for Weight Loss by Kili. This DVD is excellent for beginners, or people at that intermediate level like myself. The more you use it, the easier the moves are to understand and the harder you find yourself working. It's really amazing because you don't even realize your working so hard until you get to the cooldown and realize your sweaty and out of breath. It is just that much fun.I combine this DVD often with my Mari Winsor Pilates DVDs to get more work in my midsection...that is the one thing I think that these workouts lack the most...but in terms of working your legs and your butt and thighs, this workout has done the trick for me...after just a few weeks I noticed my thighs were getting significantly smaller. I have lost 10 lbs. in a month doing this workout...I like to combine them with Kili's other videos to keep me from getting bored.... This is nice though, it takes a half an hour of time and leaves you feeling great afterwards. A really nice workout overall.

It took me longer to appreciate this video than it did Tahitian Cardio. But I do enjoy it! It is a good workout, though I think Tahitian Cardio is a little bit more demanding. Neither is a hard-core workout for serious fitness buffs, but they are good for increasing the heartrate and moving the body. Regardless of age or lack of fitness, a person can get a pleasant workout from this video.I love Kili and her assistants. They are all lovely and a pleasure to watch. I like the music and the scenery. I wish there were more videos in this series because I'd love to have the variety and to learn more about Tahitian and hula dancing!

A good, fun, low-impact workout,

I really enjoyed this exercise video. After you do it a few times and learn the moves, you find yourself sweating without even realizing you are working hard. It was a lot of fun to do and to watch. I enjoyed the slower, more graceful pace versus a normal workout video where you're doing kicks and punches. I love Kili's voice as she guides you through the workout. The scenery is absolutely awesome! As with any low-impact aerobics video, you get out of it what you put into it. For example, if you keep your abs tight as she says, you will find you get a better workout. The one complaint I had was the tempo. The music was nice, but at times, the girls were not on the same tempo as the music. That made it difficult to follow them if you tend to listen to the beat to guide your speed (as I do). This dvd is not for anyone with knee problems. Most of the workout requires your knees to be bent and certain moves can put a lot of pressure on your knees. Overall, a good, fun, low-impact workout.

Great authentic hula in workout form,

I loved her since her first DVDs "Hula Workout" though those used cutsy 60s music & added 60s american dance moves but still have a lot of authetic hula dancing. These "Island Girl" hula workouts are more authentic. Just like her other ones, you get a great workout, your abs burn, your hips, legs get a nice workout. It's all authentic dance moves with some added quick squats, etc. added in so you barely notice it for adding toning. The authentic drum Hawaiian music is beautiful & does keep you stimulted too keep going just like a dance/rock beat would. I had no trouble following & learning the steps, there are plenty of dance DVDs that I have had trouble with, but she breaks everything down well & shows it slowly several times before speeding it up. She even cues YOUR left & right, not hers. There's a trailer for her "Hula Workout" DVDs & another authentic Hula workout like this called "Island Girl: Hula Abs & Buns" at collagevideo com

I love this video. The setting is inspiring and the insturction is perfect. It is a very motivating dance workout video that you can stick with because it is fun. I have a hard time staying motivated by excercise videos but this one doesn't even seem like a workout to me...it is just fun.

I bought this because it had so many good reviews but this DVD is strange. The warmup starts abruptly. She doesn't indicate that we are doing a warm up, she just starts dancing. She tells you to do a plie, but if you aren't a dancer, what the hell is a plie? She expects that you already know how to do that move and doesn't instruct further upon it.The worst part is she never shows you the proper stance to be standing in. It's clear her knees are bent, but she doesn't expalin how far to bend, how far apart your feet should be, do you tuck in your bottom, push it out? I took belly dancing class and they were very specific about your stance because too much or too little can throw your back out. I can't tell from the DVD what is the correct stance because of the skirts they wear. The dancing was pretty and so was the scenery. I think once I pick up a different dvd that explains the stance and the moves better, I would go back to hers. I don't feel as though she gives enough information. I also get really irritated with her showing you a move and then saying "this is blah blah blah, this is what it looks like." Yeah thanks. I'd really appreciate it if you told me how to do it. Maybe I'm just dumb, but I don't learn by being shown, I need verbal instructions. My boyfriend and I both found this DVD confusing and not terribly educational. The dance is beautiful and once I have some understanding of proper posture and such, I'll go back to this one.

What a fun little video!! There were plenty of challenges, but also plenty of fun and easy stuff that you get right away; a perfect mix. A good workout, too. I agree about this video not being for anyone with knee issues. I have minor knee issues and felt a little discomfort afterwards.

Great Start to the Hula,

I was weary about getting the Cardio Hula workout after reading one of the reviewers of the VHS, so I got it at the library to try it out...and what a pleasant surprise! The workout is everything the other reviewer said it wasn't! Fun (yes!), music (yes it was a little slow, but it was lovely and fits this particular hula), graceful (definitely!), and athletic (it is the cardio hula after all). Kili is a great instructor and the two other girls are great to watch to help with the moves. The scenery behind them is absolutely gorgeous! While I thought it was a little advanced for the very beginner (like me), that is easy to remedy. I thought it should have a few mini-workouts with a small grouping of the moves, until you can learn them, but it is easy to stop it and then continue it on the next day. I am enjoying learning the moves and plan on buying this workout and checking out others with Kili. While this might not be a 'traditional' hula, it is a great start to learning the hula. I highly recommend it!

This is actually the first one I bought. And I liked it so much that I did it twice in the one week. The time seems to fly by when I am doing it.I like the moves, I like how strong she (and the back up dancers are), I like the drumming. There are only a couple of moves which are high impact, and easy to work around if you have joint issues. This is a workout that I enjoy, and would like to think that I can build up to their sensuousness, and strength, over the coming weeks. I enjoyed this and the hula abs and arms so much, that I have ordered the other two. |
