As a longtime fan of Def Jam's albums from LL Cool J to Ludacris to Dru Hill to Montell Jordan to my girl Kelly "you sure can saang it!" Price, this album is just excellent! The handlers chose some dynamite numbers, from the jam of mid-86 Oran Juice Jones' The Rain, LL Cool J's I Need Love and Luv U Better, the 3 Montell Jordan hits (4 Montell-written songs, including Sisqo's Incomplete), Dru Hill's 3 hits, hits from Murder Inc's era, Kelly Price's hit Friend of Mine, Case's smooth Missing You, Ja Rule, Ludacris and others. Def Jam not only dominated R&B, but even pop, as 4 songs here went to No. 1 on the pop chart too! The album has such a consistent flow and pace, shifting from smooth, creamy R&B ballads to funky, beat-heavy hip hop songs. Now I know that some people will argue that their favorites aren't on here, but this album wins on all cylinders. Given this is Def Jam's 20th anniversary, this is a phenomenal release representing urban music's many changes the past 20 years. Get 10, 20, maybe 50 copies or more, because this album is slammin' all throughout! Russell Simmons should be commended for compiling this album!
