3.0 out of 5 stars The Spark Appears Lost On Island Magic
I have had the pleasure of reading all of Ms Ford's novels but this one was one that I had the most difficult reading. It actually took me close to two weeks to finish reading this book because it was a slower read for me and the difficulty I had in dealing with the conflict between Cassandra and Gordan.

I realize with a relationship these two had for four and a half...

4.0 out of 5 stars Island Magic, July 13, 2000
This review is from: Island Magic (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Cassandra Mosley has walked out on the love of her life Gordan Kramer. The multi-millionaire has offered her anything in the world, but the one thing she wants, marriage and motherhood. As much as Gordan loves Cassy, his disastrous marriage left him distrustful. Although he has to admit that Cassy was the one person who could make him believe in love and trust again, he still shuns the "M" word. Cassy's sister and her husband purchase a trip to Martinique for her. The catch is the hotel where Cassy will be staying is one of Gordan's holdings, a place that has fond memories for her. Cassy hadn't counted on Gordan's stubborn streak. When he discovers she is in Martinique, he immediately flies in, determined to win her back. But Gordan hadn't counted on competition which comes in the form of Adam, a San Diego attorney. The scenic beauty of the island of Martinique along with the aromatic food that seems to float off the pages bring the atmosphere of the country right to the reader along with the stimulating love scenes. A cast of engaging secondary characters rounds out a satisfying read from a veteran writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was a Great Story, June 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Island Magic (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Island Magic is a bitter sweet story of life. The main characters struggled with different views on marriage. After a few years of being together and knowing they are fated, one wanted to marry and start a family and one wanted nothing to do with marraige, but neither wanted to let go. Both were strong willed and committed to what they wanted. So how do you solve this problem. You must read this book to see what you would do in this situation. Or answer the question, would you compormise? I think this is one of Ms Ford's BEST efforts, a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good book, July 25, 2000
This review is from: Island Magic (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Betty is one of my favorite BET authors. Here we finally get Cassy and Gordan story and I tell you Gordan frustates me to no end. How or why Cassey wants this relationship goes beyond me. Gordan refuses to give her what she wants, refuses to compromise and refuses to give her up. She can't even hide from him. But eventually Love does prevail and Gordan comes to his senses, after much frustration.

Cassandra Mosley knew what she wanted out of life. She loved her career as chef and co-owner of a Bed & Breakfast in her hometown of Oakland, CA. She also knew that she wanted to be the wife of Gordan Kramer. She wanted to share her life and bear his children.

Gordan loved Cassy (as she is called throughout the book), but he didn't want to get married again. His first marriage ended in disaster. When one day Cassy walks out on him and doesn't turn back, he crumbles.

We are first introduced to Gordan and met Cassandra in the anthology Mama's Pearl written in 1996. Island Magic is Cassandra's story. This book was interesting. I was wondering how could a man love a woman as much as Gordan seemed to love Cassandra and not want to marry her.

Sometimes it takes uncontrollable circumstances to bring people together.

It was suggested to me by a very informative and credible African-American Book reviewer to read Mama's Pearl from the Mother's Love Anthology first.

I am glad I took her advice. If you haven't read Mama's Pearl, please do. You will get to know Cassandra's personality then and understand it now.

Great job Ms. Ford!

It actually took me close to two weeks to finish reading this book because it was a slower read for me and the difficulty I had in dealing with the conflict between Cassandra and Gordan.

I realize with a relationship these two had for four and a half years proved to have some highs and lows. But the stubborness and lack to bend on either party began to take a serious toil on me while reading this book.

For the most part, I cannot say I did not enjoy the story but it was not as fast moving and interesting as the others written by this author.

Here are my favorites of Bette Ford: After Dark, One of a Kind, For Always and Forever After.

This book was a pleasant read. It was good to see a woman not settle; her "payoff" was well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars When is love enough?, July 10, 2000
This review is from: Island Magic (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first book by the author and I must say I was happy to read it. The story line is not something you have never heard about or experienced. Cassy and Gordan have been an item for over four years. She is ready for commitment but he after having a terrible first marriage does not want to take that route again.

The one thing that keeps you into the book it that they truly love one another and can't go a day without thinking of all the love they shared.

After a break up and a near tragedy they try and work things out. Will they get married or just live together? You have to read it for yourself, you will not be dissappointed and will love this book.

I have read all of Ms. Fords books and have found them all to be very good. Island Magic kept me on the tip of my seat, talking to Gordon and Cassy. It was a different kind of love story. A very enjoyable book. Keep up the good work Ms. Ford.
