Book Description

NOTE: This edition has a linked "Table of Contents" and has been beautifully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your Amazon e-book reader or iPod e-book reader.

A rousing jungle adventure of man-eating plants, super-sized spiders, lost worlds, war and romance.

When a tourist from New York sails on the ill-fated liner Lusitania, he wakens from a night's sleep to find himself struggling in the seas off an uncharted island halfway around the world. To his dismay, he finds the island filled with monstrous creatures.

He soon finds himself caught in a rivalry between two dangerous groups competing to extract a rare substance found only on the island--it turns lead into gold!

He soon discovers a lost world, a Lemurian princess and adventure beyond his wildest dreams...

First published as 'Nightmare!" (also as The Nightmare), this debut novel of terror launched the career of Francis Stevens, the grandmistress of horror. Her writing influenced such luminaries as H.P. Lovecraft and A. Merritt.

Full of intrigue and adventure, this rare classic is a must for adventure-pulp literature fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Island of Nightmares October 21, 2013
Francis Stevens, noted more for stories of creeping horror, has written a story of high adventure not unlike Burroughs The land That Time Forgot or Wells The Island of Dr. Moreau. A rich yacht owner is cast upon an unknown island near the Philippine Islands where he is captured by a strange group of Russian Anarchists in search of a fortune. Outwardly it appears to be insignificant but conceals within it's depths a world of strange creatures. The protagonist is a sort of a wuss who finds this adventure, or misadventure, a transforming experience.

Francis Stevens was the pen name of Gertrude Barrows Bennett (1884-1939) who wrote twelve highly acclaimed fantasies including The Citadel of Fear, The Heads of Cerberus and Friend Island published in general fiction magazines such as The Argosy, The All Story and Thrill Book. Many people thought her writings the work of A, Merritt under a pen name because of her style and use of imagery. Alas! Poor Merritt, so out of fashion these days but my personal favorite for his sense of wonder and purple prose!

Island of Nightmare starts out a little difficult to follow at first but makes up for it. The surprise end is one of the the best parts.
