Editorial Reviews

Take three of the funniest, cleverest actors in the movies, plop them on a gorgeous, real-life Greek isle and add a feverish plot that involves an ingenious scam, big money, lighthearted romance and a lisping gangster and you have Island of Love. On the lam from the mob boss he fleeced, a conman (Robert Preston in a flimflam mode recalling his triumph in The Music Man) and his sardonic pal (Tony Randall) end up on Paradeisos. The two Americans promptly hoodwink the world into believing the place is an ancient lost island of love. Tourists flock in and fortunes are made - until the boss (Walter Matthau) shows up, his trigger finger twitching. The sun is bright but the stars shine brighter on this comedic Island of Love.

I remembered this movie from the early '60s, and I loved it then. It is actually a "fun" film with wonderful actors, a unique plot, and beautiful scenery. The 3 main actors, Preston, Randall, and Matthau make your time almost worth the money, but not quite.

It would ruin the plot to go much further before you see the movie, but think of serious crime boss Matthau with an amusing odd lisp as he chooses to produce a movie which does not suit his businesses or new partners' ideas of making money from a Greek island's reputation. They all get together (by serendipity) on the island in a chase for life by Preston (a creative con man) and Randall (trying to stay in a deal with Preston by tippling all through the movie). The villagers try to help the escapees from Matthau and his henchmen (who all emulate the boss' actions), but Matthau's fiance and a Greek woman who is set on marrying Randall get into the mix as a family matter makes for a long run to the end of the movie.

It isn't the great movie that I once thought was "hilarious," but it is a couple of hours of humor and watching 3 terrific actors "do their thing." In my opinion, the price is too high for this movie, and if I hadn't recalled it so fondly, I wouldn't have paid the price required. I have given it 4 stars because it isn't just "okay." It's a bit better than that, but not by much.

Robert Preston, Tony Randall and Walter Matthau, should be great right?……Im a fan of all three. Almost feel sorry for them, story so bad... lisping Walter Matthau?... Gave it 2 stars only if you want to look at Robert Preston. He is so very easy on the eyes with great outfits, thats it.
