Book Description

May 10, 2004
A resort community once known as a “playground for the wealthy,” City Island rose to fame as a leader in boat manufacturing and gained international recognition for the victorious yachts it produced for the America’s Cup races. Well-known shipyards on the island, including Nevins, Minneford, and Kretzers, weathered society’s changing demands to cater to a new clientele of boat owners who required smaller vessels with low

maintenance features. With over 200 vintage photographs accompanied by an insightful text, City Island and Orchard Beach traces the transformation of this European-styled community from the mid-1800s to the 1990s. This visual journey to the early days of the island focuses on the community’s sense of purpose and its adaptability to the changes brought on by time and technology. Learn about the lives of the island’s original settlers, tour its original homes and businesses, and discover the significant role that the area played in the Revolutionary War.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific, December 6, 2007
This review is from: City Island and Orchard Beach (NY) (Images of America) (Paperback)
This was my home town growing up. City Island is a very unusual and ideal place to grow up and live. Very close knit community, home town feel in New York. Really enjoyed the detailed history that this book provided and it filled in alot of information that I, an Islander, did not even know! Highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Images of America - City Island et al., October 19, 2008
This review is from: City Island and Orchard Beach (NY) (Images of America) (Paperback)
The presentation contains some very memorable pictures
of the old Bronx/Westchester Line. i.e.

o the Belden Point Pier
o South End City Island
o McDaniel Bungalow (20s)
o St. Mary's Star of the Sea
o Grace Episcopal Church
o Split Rock at the Bronx/Westchester Line
o City Island Bridge (1908)

There are many scenes which contain the residents of
yesteryear. Some of the portraits may have been the
parents and grandparents of people I knew at one time.
The acquisition would be perfect for students of the
local history and culture. I remember many of these
scenes from childhood. Some still exist today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scott Tops the Work of Terhune and Isoros!, February 15, 2000
By
Cecil L. Twomby (Biloxi, Mississippi) - See all my reviews
It was said that the research of Terhune, with the courageous assistance of Isoros, was the seminal work concerning the study of the cute community of City Island. Well hold on to your hats because C. A. Scott has come to town with an exciting new approach to the study of "community" with a statistical model that is pure and honest!

The preface could have been bettor served had the Farley Messinger theory been presented with some color and less anxiety--- which is why I can only give Scott only 4 stars for her otherwise exciting book.
