5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read; very informative!, March 30, 1999

What a job this guy has! He gets to ride around in the Black Hills with a bunch of college professors (I had to pay tuition to hang out with them) and then write what happened. I found the search for the last fossil cycad with Mark Gable particularly fascinating, as well as the study of plants with Audrey Gable (I think she gets off on microspores). The best thing about this book is that Ed has the ability to translate the near-latin-speak of the scientist to plain Kings' English so it actually makes sense. Great Book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The ride of a lifetime through the Black Hills, September 28, 2006
This review is from: Island in the Plains: A Black Hills Natural History (Paperback)
If you cannot experience the Black Hills first hand, there is no better way in my view than to ride along with this fine author. If there is a story under a rock, over a hill or around a corner, the author Ed Raventon, will serve it up to you in the best possible fashion. After consuming this fine work, I found myself going on a second trip through the Black Hills in my mind, book in hand, and every now and then seeing another traveller with the same book tucked under arm looking about and smiling. This book is a joy to read and an experience to cherish. Anyone planning a vacation to the Dakotas would be well advised to begin right here, and go from there.
