Captivating!, September 30, 2002

This is a story of Kori, of the island tribe, her persecution at the hands of her own people and her struggles to survive as an outcast. Kori's people live on an island that was once an old lava flow off the coast of the mainland. Their fear of 'old ones' (evil ground spirits) has united the tribe in constant 'appeasement' rituals, and virtually eliminated tribal conflict. Kori, 20, has always been different. She has always questioned the will of the "Old Ones," (the evil ground spirits who guard and harass her people) and the will of her mother, the tribe's shaman. Unable to secure a mate because of her 'differentness', a conflict with her mother arises which leaves her an outcast. I really liked this story. While the beginning was rather slow and a little dark (Kori's people's fear of the old ones is at times all-consuming), Kori was a believable heroine, with a likeable personality. Her struggles to be accepted by her tribe, her mother, were at times heart-wrenching. Her eventual romance with a non-tribal male was well-portrayed. I recommend this novel for fans of 'prehistoric fiction.' You won't be disappointed.

Worth the time, April 8, 1998

I really enjoyed this book. It is one of those that you stay up really late at night saying "I'll just read one more chapter then I'll go to bed!" It is well written and not "overly symbolic" like you find in some books about this subject. I charcters are believable and the story is great. I already have the sequel on back-order!

My REVIEW:
Charlotte Prentiss has done a masterful job creating this book. She writes beautifully and so poetically. She is patient and takes her time with the details to bring the story to life. At first when Kori was expressed as different from the rest of her kinfolk and that as a result she was unmated, then she was cast out for 30 days with no defense it seemed very Clan of the Cave Bearish. As the story developed though the plot thickened and it took on a story of its own. It took a different direction entirely than how it began. It was very original with a slight Romeo & Juliet theme. The characters were all different from one another. You had enemies, the good, the bad, the unaware, the superstitious, and the manipulative. So many different characters and all with deferent personalities and very well developed. The descriptions come alive so vividly in my mind. I think the reason I enjoyed this book so much was that Kori reminds me much of myself. In the end though I think she gave up her solemn vows that kept her moving, but I don't blame her since I am sure that it seemed hopeless anyways. But being hopeless was never something she gave into that easily so it seemed strange that she walked away from her tribe and left them to the superstitious rituals instead of leading them to safety that we all know her strong will could do. Of course there wasn't much left for her to cling to there and she acted selfishly to be with the one she loved. Regardless, of how much her character disappointed me in the end by not saving the day I am eager to read the next book to follow Kori's life because the disappointment was very little and more realistic than what you would hope for.
