This review is from: Island of Wild Horses (Hardcover)
Only a 60 page book full of black and white pictures of these wild horses on a barrier island half in Virginia, half in Maryland. Very timely read for me, as I had just come off Padre Island National Seashore, and here I had this book about Assateague National Seashore, where these wild horses, thought to come from a wrecked Spanish galleon in the 1500s, are protected. However, every July they are herded across to another island for an annual auction that weeds the herd and helps raise money for their care during harsh winters and for the firemen who watch over them. Very interesting short book. Would have preferred pictures in color, however. Horses appear quite stout and muscular, not thin at all, so they must do well to have survived so long on this island.
