From the Back Cover

The doctors warned her not to go...
After living with diabetes for years, Erin Spineto was quickly losing her sanity. Buried beneath blood tests, injections and medical devices to hold on to her wits, she needed a change to take back her life. But how?
Erin loved sailing with every ounce of her being, but doctors told her years ago never to do it alone. It was far too dangerous. What if her blood sugars dropped while she was alone in the middle of the ocean far from help? What if seasickness caused her blood sugars to rise, slamming her into a diabetic coma and leaving her incapable of handling the boat?

...but it was a trip she had to make.
In Islands and Insulin, Erin sails a 22 foot sailboat down the Florida Keys as she fights winds, currents and swells that threaten to capsize the boat. Join her on her journey to accepting diabetes as she navigates those tumultuous early years of adulthood and learns how valuable real friendships are in the battle against a chronic disease.

Erin Spineto leads a wonderful life... that diabetes happens to be a part of. "Islands and Insulin" is a story of a great life journey... that diabetes happens to be a part of. Erin communicates the adventures of living with diabetes like only a person with diabetes can, and she has found her unique and powerful voice in this tale of navigating the seas and a chronic disease with grace. Any reader of this diabetic sailor's memoir stands to learn a lot about the swells and tides of diabetes, life, and love. I raise a Diet Dr. Pepper in honor of Erin and her first must-read book.

The cover photo is what first drew me to this book, and I enjoyed it from there to the end. As another T1D, it's always great to hear of other T1D's struggles and accomplishments, all of which I could relate to. I loved the honesty throughout the book- it makes Erin Spineto (Dr. Spineto!;-) very relatable and interesting. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I am not diabetic but I know plenty who are and I thought I knew quite a bit about what they go through. I didn't. I was impressed, educated, and entertained throughout the book. That's no easy feat! I highly recommend this book to anyone, but for those diabetic or close to someone who is; it's a must-read!

As you know Bon voyage is a French phrase borrowed into English meaning, "Good trip", and typically translated as meaning "have a good trip". It can also refer to the party given for the person going away. Erin Spineto has written an fun "Good Trip" in this great tale of adventure that takes the reader to the edge as she independently goes where Dr's told her not to go! I applaud Erin's fierce independence and determination to thrive as a writer, sailor, adventurous risk-taker. Islands and Insulin: A Diabetic Sailor's Memoir is a must read for anyone interested in sailing, knowing more about life with type 1 diabetes. It is an excellent and fun read! Get reading, you won't be disappointed. Bon Voyage!

By the time I finished reading this book, I was thanking the heavens above, for the privilege of not being a diabetic. The author is on a heroic quest within these pages, and brings the secrets of living with this disease out of the closet -- honestly, lovingly, and still unafraid to share the dark side of what life can be like. I especially laud her for learning to balance her dreams, with a heavy dose of caution. Her adventurous spirit could have cost her life, and the loss to her family would have been unimaginable. A wife, mother, and a sailor, who has done it all! Great read! And you have my thanks, for inspiring the rest of us to live to the fullest, a day at a time..

Not only is this book a great inspirational struggle about a girl and her struggle with diabetes during this sailing trip, but it also was flashing back to her childhood and dealing with diabetes. I really liked the way the book was written and painted the story. It was flashing back and forth and this made for an enjoyable read. I think anybody growing up with diabetes and struggles, will find some good powerful messages in this book. I know I will keep my copy and buy another to pass on to some young type1 diabetic person.

Islands and Insulin is so fantastic even people who can't relate well will enjoy this book! She explains in such detail her struggles and how she over comes them. I enjoyed this book so much I had to read it twice, and reading it twice really made a huge difference because I really really thought about what she was writing. I would hope to meet the author some day because she is very inspiring.

This book was a great read. I have been a diabetic for 23 years and a book lover just as long. I read 2-3 books a week and I couldn't put this one down. A must read for anyone who has encountered diabetes.
