Sunshine and warmth all year,

I passed on a lot of tropical-themed calendars this year because so many of them just don't give a warm feel. The sky or vegetation might be too dark, or the water might look more choppy than inviting. I wanted to feel the sun when I looked at the pictures, not a cold ocean breeze.
"Islands In The Sun" is the calendar that finally provided the warmth I was looking for. If you can relate to what I've said here, then take my advice.

First of all I have to tell you that I am a calendar snob. The photographs are nice, but the calendar is made of thin, shiny paper which I don't like. I usually buy mine right after the holidays when they are 50% off. Unfortunately this year I didn't get to the mall in time. My favorites were gone! So for the first time ever I tried choosing one online. I thought this one looked nice, but I really don't care for it. It's the most I've ever paid for a calendar, and I don't love it. (for some unknown reason I feel the need to LOVE my calendars.) If all you care about is a functional calendar with pretty pictures, you may like this one. But for me, it doesn't have the quality I've come to enjoy. Hope this helps.

I am very happy with my new calendar! I wasn't able to view all 12 photos at the time of purchase, but they are all wonderful. I think about the beach everyday I look at it.

Some Duds, but Mostly Bright, Enticing Photos of Sun, Sand & Blue Skies.,

The 2009 "Islands in the Sun" wall calendar from Sellers Publishing collects 12 images of tropical islands from a variety of photographers and stock agencies. As is almost always the case with calendars that don't represent a single artist's work, there are some duds, but this is still a nice collection of sun, sand, water, and clear blue skies. The calendar starts with a picture by Art Wolfe of Promthep Cape, Thailand at dawn and ends with a nondescript image by James Watt of Sulawesi, Indonesia at dusk. Dawn to dusk. I get the concept but would rather have had 12 months of sunny mid-day images that radiate warmth. I want to look at heat during the winter months.
The 10 months in between have bright, sunny photos from locations in the South Pacific and Southeast Asia. A mixed bag, but some are quite nice, and most do a good job of conveying the calm isolation and warmth of tropical islands. March and April are exceptions. The March image is overexposed and could easily have been fixed with some editing. April's image is contrasty, not sharp, and not interesting. Just a bad picture. March, April, and December are no good, but I'm enjoying the other months. The calendar itself is printed black on a white background with plenty of space to write. The paper is slick, but pencil and ballpoint pen write on it easily. Size is 12 inches square. |
