Meet Jake Stone,
By Jaime Lopez (Walnut Creek, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Isle of Bones (Paperback)
I have to say I was anxious to read this book since I met the author some time ago and it wasn't a bad first effort. We are introduced to Jake Stone , a cop who's been through the trenches and wants some peace in his life. Unfortunately , trouble won't leave him be and we ride with Jake to see when , and if , he'll live to drink another Carta Blanca. First off , I have to say what I liked best about this book is how well Nikkel sets the scene. You almost feel like you're at the bar or on the deck of a boat in the dock. Secondly , though it's not the first time we've seen a lonely character down on his luck , you will find yourself pulling for Stone to get out of the way of danger. I would've given this four stars except for three things; one , there weren't enough cliffhangers to keep me anxious to turn the page , two , some of the dialogue didn't flow well , and three , I had a pretty good idea who was gunning for him a third of the way through. Overall , I'd say Nikkel has given us a good character to root for and I believe his future Stone novels will be even better. So if you don't want to be lost later on in the series , and you're not a professor of literature (or as critical as I am) then read this book.
