Book Description

Revised and updated from the original, Christy-award finalist Shadow of Colossus.

Enslaved in a World of Money and Power, Tessa Dares to be Free.

Raised as courtesan to wealthy and powerful men, Tessa of Delos serves at the whim of her current patron, the politician Glaucus. After ten years with him, Tessa has abandoned all desire for freedom or love, choosing instead to lock her heart away.

But when Glaucus meets a violent death in his own home, Tessa grasps at a fragile hope. Only she knows of his death. If she can keep it a secret long enough, she can escape.

Tessa throws herself on the mercy of the Greek god Helios, but finds instead unlikely allies in Nikos, a Greek slave, and Simeon, Glaucus’s Jewish head servant. As Simeon introduces her to a God unlike any she has ever known and Nikos begins to stir feelings she had thought long dead, Tessa fights to keep her heart protected.

As an assassination plot comes to light, Tessa must battle for her own freedom—and for those to whom she has begun to open her heart—as forces collide that shatter the island’s peace.

“. . . Readers will find much to enjoy here: fine writing, suspense, mystery, faith, love, and a new look at an old story.” —Publishers Weekly (for Garden of Madness)

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting Read! November 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Provided as a complimentary copy by Booksneeze, Isle of Shadows proved to be everything it promised. Set in the turbulent and obscure times of the "silent" period (between the Old and New Testaments), Isle of Shadows described the sad but riveting life of Tessa, a high-class prostitute to a key political figure on a Greek island. Despite Tessa's best attempts to seal off her heart, an elderly Jewish servant wins her trust and demonstrates Yahweh's love to her during her time of deepest need. The love of the One True God and of a young man of character eventually win Tessa over and help her to face the formidable forces seeking to destroy her.

Tracy Higley is becoming a real favorite of mine. Her writing is polished and nuanced, feeding the reader meaty Scriptural truths while capturing attention through rich detail and characterization. Tessa's internal transformation speaks to any reader who is struggling with guilt over the past and is looking for a fresh start and the healing power of forgiveness. I especially liked the surprise Biblical historical character link to the Messiah revealed at the end of the book! Higley hits another home run in Isle of Shadows, for sure!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read November 19, 2012
Tracy L. Higley's interest in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World has led to some excellent reading opportunities for the rest of us. After reading her novel, Garden of Madness, which takes place amidst the gardens of Babylon, I was eager to read Isle of Shadows too.

This is the tale of a beautiful and intelligent courtesan to a wealthy dignitary in ancient Rhodes. She desires freedom above all else. Since it seems beyond her grasp, she considers suicide beneath the shadow of the colossal statue of the Greek God Helios. But, there are two other men who will rescue and play major roles in her future. The handsome Nikos, who seems to be a Greek slave, and Simeon, the fatherly head servant in the household of her patron.

In addition to a story that keeps you turning pages, at the end of the book Ms. Higley includes The Story behind the Story...and Beyond! You will learn how the Colossus was built, how long it took and how long it stood before being destroyed in a great earthquake. All fascinating facts and more. Also, she offers sights, sounds and locations on the Isle of Shadows page entitled "Interactive Reading," at her website [...]

Isle of Shadows was originally published in 2008 titled, Shadow of Colossus. It was very wise of Thomas Nelson Publishers to acquire it and republish a new, improved edition.

Isle of Shadows is an exciting, fun read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am grateful to Thomas Nelson for a complimentary review copy. --Gail Lewis

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Historical Fiction January 13, 2013
By theresa
Isle of Shadows is set in ancient Greece. Tessa of Delos serves as a hetaera (educated prostitute) to a powerful man; and when he dies, her welfare is threatened. As the sole witness to his death, she will either be held responsible for his death, or she will be sent to serve an even worse man. Desiring both physical and emotional freedom, Tessa searches for a way to escape. But as more complications arise, she finds herself with only two allies: a Jewish servant, Simeon, and a mysterious Greek man, Nikos.

This story is actually one of a few books inspired by the author's interest in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Isle of Shadows centers on the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue to the Greek god, Helios, which was destroyed in an earthquake. In fact, the book was first published as, The Shadow of Colossus.

I enjoyed both the story, and the historical element. I really emphasized with Tessa's character: she reminded me a lot of how I felt before I encountered Jesus. The dynamic between the characters, and the swift movement of the story also made for a captivating read.

An added bonus is the author's interactive website, which provides pictures and videos of Rhodes, Greece, so readers can better envision the location and historical context of the story. I anticipate more from this excellent storyteller.

I received a complimentary copy of this book as a part of the Thomas Nelson Book Review Blogging Program.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable March 25, 2013

I won this book in a Giveaway and have finally had a chance to finish it. Overall, I really enjoyed this story. Tessa was very believable as she tried to keep hope alive even against all the pain she's been through with life. The story was well paced and had a bit of a mystery to it but it seemed a bit...preachy.

I'm not against God being in books I read or characters finding their way but it just seemed shoe-horned into the book. It didn't make me hate the book but I do admit to skimming in two different chapters when I felt things were being laid on really heavy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suspense and ancient history! January 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For the past several weeks of reading, the 1800s have been my jam. I was all things 19th Century. So I decided to switch things up, and as Blackstreet once said, go back… wayyy back, back into time. Nah baby, nah baby… My bad. I digress.

So why not head into the B.C. days? And if you’re a fan of ancient historical fiction, Tracy L. Higley is a fantastic go-to author. So when Isle of Shadow was on a kindle deal, I hit 1-Click right quick.

As always, Higley ties in mystery, suspense, history and romance in a way that keeps you turning pages and enjoying the story. Plus I always feel like I went through a entertaining history lesson. Like, the Ancient Greek hetaeras reminded me of the geishas of Japan. Or how the hetaeras were embraced by men in debate and philosophy, the idea that women weren’t equal to men was still strongly believed and maintained.

I find Higley one of the finest ancient historical fiction writers out there and look forward to reading some of the other novels I have hanging out on my kindle!

Do you enjoy some ancient history reads? Have you read any of Higley’s books? I’d love to hear from you!

More About the Author

I've been writing adventure stories since the time I first picked up a pencil. I still have my first "real" novel--the story I began at the age of eight during a family trip to New York City.

Through my childhood I wrote short stories, plays for my friends to perform (sometimes I had to bribe them), and even started a school newspaper (OK, I was the editor, journalist and photographer since no one took that bribe to join me). Then there were the "drama years" of junior high, when I filled a blank journal with romance and poetry. Sigh.

In my adult years I finally got serious about publishing suspense fiction, and have since authored twelve novels in twelve years.

When I'm not writing, life is full of other adventures--running a business, raising kids, and my favorite pastime: traveling the world.

I started traveling to research my novels and fell in love with experiencing other cultures. It's my greatest hope that you'll feel like you've gotten to travel to the settings of my books, through the sights, sounds, smells, colors, and textures I try to bring back from my travels and weave into my stories.

To experience my travel journals and see the romantic settings of my books, I hope you'll visit my website at or meet up with me on Facebook at
