Editorial Reviews

Limited vinyl LP including bonus CD edition. 2013 debut from this duo consisting of siblings Natalie and Elliot Bergman. Wilde Belle is a unique combination of bold songwriting, studio wizardry and late night vibes hailing from Chicago, IL. Natalie and Elliot wrote, produced and recorded the album by themselves with engineer Bill Skibbe. Features the single 'Keep You'.

Last September, Wild Belle, the Chicago-based brother and sister duo of Elliot and Natalie Bergman, issued an EP to showcase its rapidly growing internet-fueld buzz for the song "Keep You" (kudos to my daughter who alerted me to this). Now finally comes the band's debut album.

"Isles" (11 tracks; 40 min.) starts off with the already-mentioned "Keep You", an irresitable full-throttle reggae tune. Natalie as the lead singer just sounds wonderful on this and throughout. It is followed by a slightly faster but still full-on reggae "It's Too Late" (also from that EP). "Shine" is a more indie-sounding track, although horns are aplenty here too. "Twisted" is a breezy tune, one you can expect from the Caribbean "isles", so to speak. On the more soul-oriented tunes such as "Happy Home" and in particular "Another Girl", the ghost of Amy Winehouse lingers, as it would be easy to imagine how Amy could've evolved to songs like that. Late into the album, we get another change of pace when Elliot takes lead vocals on "When It's Over". "Take Me Away" closes out the album nicely.

In all, this is quite the album, and one of the best in this young 2013 so far. Wild Belle played last September at the MidPoint Music Festival here in Cincinnati, and I somehow missed them (still kicking myself over that). I can only hope to get a chance to see them in concert sometime soon. Can't wait to see how these songs resonate with a live band. Meanwhile "Isles" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I heard this on NPR radio with an interview of the Bergman brother and sister team who produced it. Natalie writes all the music and Elliot is a musician and singer as is Natalie. I like the refreshing blend of Indie,Reggae and the Soul Natalie weaves in her
songs. Thanks NPR for featuring them.

This album is so consistently good, and pretty much every song is something I want to sing and dance along to. I saw them live last fall, and they were great then, too. I'm shocked that they've not taken off even more than they already have.

This is a good album suprisingly from the band Wild Belle. I heard from so many sources how these two siblings mix in so many genres of music into this one album. The music by Elliott Bergman is pretty easy listening, that has that laid back vibe to it, especially when he plays the saxophone, and Natalie's singing just goes perfect over all of the songs. Its like the kind of music that will make your head nod and you can sing along, and maybe even dance to, but not as much. A lot of the tracks really stood out to me such as "Shine", as I meant by a catchy sort of track to dance to. The song "Backslider" has a nice hypnotizing love effect lyrically. Even Elliott's vocals carry its weight on "When Its Over". Each song here contributes greatly to the album in one way or another. At 11 tracks, clocking in at less than 40 minutes, the album isn't too long where it begans to wear out from its length.

An overall excellent album from this sibling band, especially how they blend in so many genre styles while still managing to hook the listener. If you like a little retro style singing for your ears (an easy comparison to the late Amy Winehouse), then you definately will enjoy this album. Highly recommended. Peace.

Note: Some versions of this album have a bonus track "I'm In Love" that was cover of Evelyn "Champagne" King's song with the same name that originally appeared as a digital b-side of the single "It's Too Late" (that you can obtain at numerous digital music outlets).
