4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not XLS good
I bought Isms because of the X-Legged Sally connection.

XLS is one of my all-time favorite bands, so when I found

out about Flat Earth Society, I had to hear it. The Isms

CD is good, very good in places, but it's not quite up to

XLS standards. The similarities are there, but it's just

3.0 out of 5 stars Just about as eclectic as Jazz can get
..At times a little too eclectic...This band puts alot on the table with it's compiled 1st american release, and not all of it does work..I do wish they would try for a little less zany, and a little more sincere. When the collective tries too hard to build up sound collages they sometimes suffocate a bit under it's massive weight, but usually the underlying backbone of compositional experience shines through. The most impressive feat here is how many influences come through the jazz format, probally lending itself to the future sounds of a variety of fusion genres more then it does it's own natural genre...Think of the Mr. Bungle (Patton himself handpicked the tracks for this albums release) anything goes mentality, but being executed by actual Jazz musicians...

CD is good, very good in places, but it's not quite up to

XLS standards. The similarities are there, but it's just

not the quite the same insanely energetic, precise, bizzare,

Zappa-influenced big band jazz. But if you've heard X-Legged

Sally and liked them, then Isms is worth the purchase. You

should enjoy it - just don't get your hopes up to high.
