Format: Audio CD
Isn't It Romantic: Capitol Sings Rodgers And Hart has some of the very best recording artists from the golden era of Capitol Records singing so well on some songs by the great Rodgers and Hart. The sound quality is excellent and the artwork is also very nicely done.

Susan Barrett starts things off right with a great rendition of "Manhattan. "Susan has a great voice and although the male backup singers bolster her performance she didn't really need them--she's wonderful! Susan handles those tempo and key changes like a champ! Great! June Christy also weighs in with a sublime rendition of "You Took Advantage Of Me;" I first heard this in the movie A Star Is Born with Judy Garland and it still sounds great when June Christy sings it. The Dinning Sisters also score a hit with a very sensitive rendition of "Where Or When." I love every minute of it.

Mel Torme sings "Blue Moon" with panache and this impresses me greatly; Mel's voice was like a finely tuned instrument and it always made his performances so very special. Listen also for Gordon MacRae's great rendition of "My Funny Valentine;" Gordon never sounded better. Gordon's voice is rich and full of masculine warmth. "My Funny Valentine" is truly a highlight of this album.

Peggy Lee delivers "My Heart Stood Still" with all her heart and soul; and the strings are used to great advantage. The percussion also works well for "My Heart Stood Still." Nat King Cole also contributes a whopper with his "This Can't Be Love;" Nat's voice is strong and the big band arrangement fits in perfectly for this classic love song. In addition, "It's Easy To Remember" by Dean Martin features Dean crooning his very best and Dean never skips a beat! Wonderful!

I all ready have the Ella Fitzgerald version of Songbooks, and it's terrific, though there are songs on that compilation that I don't dig too well. This compilation more than makes up for it. Check out "My Funny Valentine" by Gordon MacRae ("Oklahoma!"). Absolutely FANTASTIC rendition. Lots of energy and charisma. This song is worth the price of the CD alone. The rest of the CD is fantastic, from the beatnick styled 'The Lady is a Tramp' to the beautiful harmony of the Four Freshmen in 'Spring is Here'. If you're a fan of Rodgers and Hart, you'll really love this set.
