5.0 out of 5 stars I must disagree, October 30, 2001
This review is from: Isn't It Romantic: Capitol Sings Rodgers & Hart (Audio CD)
I don't know where Lawrance M. Bernabo is coming from, but to say "there just are not as many great songs by this duo" as by other composers is absurd. Rodgers & Hart songs are consistenly musically superior to Rodgers & Hammerstein songs due simply to the fact the Hammerstein insisted on writing the lyrics first, thereby locking Rodgers into conventional tempi and limiting his creative options. I would put Rodgers & Hart on an equal plane with the Gershwins and Porter, and certainly with Berlin. Rodgers melodies shine on this album, and I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars SOME GEMS, September 11, 2004

Like most collections of this type, this disc is not satisfying as a whole, but contains some gems if you are a RODGERS and HART fan.GORDON MACRAE's version of MY FUNNY VALENTINE is marvelous, and so is MARGARET WHITING's THOU SWELL,PEGGY LEE's THE LADY IS A TRAMP and DEAN MARTIN's IT'S EASY TO REMEMBER to name a few.Half of the cd is quite good.On the bad side are the vocal groups's version of songs that simply does not belong in the collection. It's a pity that they did not include FRANK SINATRA who was a CAPITOL singer from 1953 to 1962.So if you are a die hard fan of DICK and LARRY,it is worth buying especially at this low price.

I expected a CD with old interpretations and/or historic ones. To my surprise, these old recordings are quite modern and good to the ears. I recommend this disk for the good memories it brings.

Great presentations of some of the best, and best known, Rodgers and Hart. But I was disappointed that Dancing on the Ceiling was absent. Also, I was hoping to find some R&H with the Andrews Sisters, especially Sing for your Supper. Can't have it all, but this is a great CD with great artists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Capitol's stars cover the songs of Rodgers & Hart, February 9, 2001
This review is from: Isn't It Romantic: Capitol Sings Rodgers & Hart (Audio CD)
"Isn't It Romantic," the Capitol Sings collection of songs by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, is one of the lesser collections in the series by default simply because there just are not as many great songs by this duo in comparison to Rodgers & Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, or Cole Porter. In comparison to those other albums this one is one of the slowest in terms of the average tempo of the songs, which is to be expected when you have Mel Torme doing "Blue Moon," Dolores Gray singing "Isn't It Romantic," and Gordon MacRae covering "My Funny Valentine." But even Vic Damone's "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" sounds just too darn slow to my ear. These recordings span from the Dinning Sisters's 1943 version of "Where or When" to the 1967 cover of "It Never Entered My Mind" by Nancy Wilson. The standout tracks are Peggy Lee's jazzy "The Lady Is A Tramp," Jane Froman's "With A Song In My Heart," and Les Brown & His Band of Renown's version of Rodger's instrumental "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue," long a personal favorite of mine. As always there is a healthy mix of name artists such as Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughn and the Andrews Sisters with forgotten names such as Susan Barett, June Christy and the Dinning Sisters. The entire Capitol Sings series is a treat for those who have favorite musical composers and are not adverse to hearing slightly different versions of their greatest hits.
