5.0 out of 5 stars A reflective journey, short in space, long in time
This is a much better book than the previous review would indicate. It's an unusual approach to writing about much-written-about Oxford. It balances observant reporting, personal reflection, and dialogue with earlier writers from antiquity to the present. The books weaves thoughtful comments on a wide variety of historical, political, and economic issues into the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Street of Dreams
The author writes about his investigations arising from walks along a modern mixed-cultural and commercial street, Cowley Road, near both his home and Oxford University. Mr. Attlee, a talented writer, is best when allowing the shopkeepers and others with ties to the ancient street tell their own stories. However, the book, as it proceeds, slides into ever more of Mr...

This review is from: Isolarion: A Different Oxford Journey (Hardcover)
The author writes about his investigations arising from walks along a modern mixed-cultural and commercial street, Cowley Road, near both his home and Oxford University. Mr. Attlee, a talented writer, is best when allowing the shopkeepers and others with ties to the ancient street tell their own stories. However, the book, as it proceeds, slides into ever more of Mr. Attlee's thoughts on life (anti-automobile, anti-Iraq war, anti-big business) than on the more interesting and vibrant community that borders Cowley Road.

This is a much better book than the previous review would indicate. It's an unusual approach to writing about much-written-about Oxford. It balances observant reporting, personal reflection, and dialogue with earlier writers from antiquity to the present. The books weaves thoughtful comments on a wide variety of historical, political, and economic issues into the travel narrative. The writer alternates tones skillfully, ranging from nostalgic to humorous to reportage, without losing a sense of a central voice. Recommended--I'm sending several copies to friends I lived with in Oxford years ago.
