Dark, Melodic and Intelligent,

Formed in 2005 Ghost Brigade are a relatively new group and have gained popularity through steady touring and by fans on Myspace. Isolation Songs is the bands second release and personal is the better of the two. The previous album Guided by Fire focused more on the heavier points where as Isolation Songs levels out the melody and the heavier parts. Though don't be discouraged as the band packs quite a punch in the heaviness department showing some intense duel lead guitar and very aggressive yelling/screaming.
The melodic parts where acoustics and keyboards are utilized truly show a drastic contrast to the roaring Melo Death leads. Further more vocalist Manne Ikonen's gritty yelling tone contrasts nicely with his very well done clean vocals and many of the Chorus' such as the one heard on 'My Heart Is A Tomb' are catchy enough to ensure them a steady following of fans. The overall sound comes off a Melodic Death to me but with a darker overtone and is worth a listen. I would also like to add that this album strongly reminds me of Insomnium's latest release Across the Dark which follows in the same vein of Melodic acoustics and Melo Death leads.

What would happen if the members of Cult of Luna decided to take a trip to Finland and team up with the members of Insomnium? Well, I would expect the outcome to be familiar to Ghost Brigade's sophomore album, "Isolation Songs".
Melodic death metal has made quite the uprising ever since its roots were planted in the 90's by bands like Dark Tranquillity and In Flames. There have been bands that managed to expand upon the sound, and then there have been bands that didn't do anything refreshing with the sound at all. Its appreciation has grown across multiple audiences by the 2000's, and even if you think that it's been beating a dead horse for years, here's an album that will refresh your thoughts on the genre. This album packs punch, but they don't overdo it at all. Do you appreciate the heavier parts by Isis and Cult of Luna? Don't you worry, because Ghost Brigade managed to put plenty of that here, with a healthy balance of melodic clean vocals and passages to level out the field. Acoustics are thrown in not just for the sake of it, but because they tie songs together, so if you're a fan of acoustic passages like in Agalloch's or early Ulver's works, this will be sure to please. "Isolation Songs" is one of the biggest surprises of 2009, and if they manage to keep playing their cards right, they will be amongst the ranks of bigger bands. I highly recommend this if you're a fan of any of the bands listed above, or if you want a refresher on melodeath. 9.0/10

Since getting this CD a week ago, I haven't stopped listening to it yet. I stumbled aross this band and decided to give them a chance. They are truly excellent. They reside somewhere in the melodic death metal genre but they are much more than that. They are very heavy and yet beautiful and melodic. The singer can growl with the best of them, but also sings some great clean vocals. This CD simply shreds. Every song is very well crafted and packed with emotion and raw power. This band could get big in a hurry, so check them out. It's worth every penny.
