Mr Dobyns does an excellent job of giving the reader an overview of Isshinryu Karate. It is not a "how to" book. It discusses the history of Isshinryu and the origins of the katas in the system. An excellent addition to any Isshinryu Karate library.

This is a thin book, Thats gives a quick survey of Isshinryu Karate. However it gives very little detail into the kata- and in my opinion doesnt really touch on the philosophy of Isshinryu that much either.

A worthwhile reference for beginners,

While Dobyns has gone to some lengths to research Isshinryu, it appears that he falls somewhat short in his understanding of a few key points, and in some areas, he is innacurate or incomplete in his statements. Still, this is one of only a few books that discuss the history of Isshinryu, and it makes a good reference for somebody training in this style.

Where Are the Good Isshinryu Books?,

This review is from: Isshinryu Karate Do: Its History and Philosophy (Paperback)
History and Philosophy of Isshinryu Karate-do by Michael Dobyns is too thin. If what one wants is a book on Isshinryu technique one should consider Long and Wheeler's three volume set but for those with a smaller budget I would suggest Isshinryu: the One Heart-- One Mind Method by Allen Wheeler ISBN 0-89826-017-5.All of the above mentioned are rather thin and of poor quality. The paper and binding leave much to be desired and the photo reproductions are inadequate for those seeking to learn the correct forms of the techniques. This could all be attributed to them sharing the same publishing company. If one can overlook these failings in this book, one can overlook the fact that for the most part the information it contains can be gleaned from either Long and Wheeler's three volume set or from Isshinryu: the One Heart-- One Mind Method by Wheeler who are the first authorities on Isshinryu. The only really new information for me was that on the history and transmission of the Isshinryu Kata. The title (History and Philosophy of Isshinryu Karate-do) gives one the impression that one is purchasing a detailed book on Isshinryu but this is not the case. The sections are to brief and the information is too close to outline form. I do not like writing bad reviews but in this case I felt it necessary due to the lack of good Isshinryu books out there. |
