Book Description

June 30, 2002
Raabe examines some of the most perplexing problems a client may present to a counselor and how a philosopher would deal with them. He provides a detailed philosophical discussion as well as illustrative case studies of some of the most important issues encountered in any counseling practice. The first six chapters discuss philosophical counseling in general terms, while the following 15 chapters deal with specific life issues such as the differences between how men and women communicate and how this is relevant to a counseling discussion, the role of medication in therapy, the concept of normalcy, the meaning of life, the motivation behind suicide, dream interpretation, and religious beliefs. An important resource for professionals, students, and scholars involved with philosophical counseling and applied/practical philosophy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“[e]xplains what philosophical counseling is and what it isn't, exploring the broad spectrum of possibilities for philosophy when it ceases to limit itself to academe. Recommended. All levels.”–Choice

“[a] useful addition to the rapidly growing support now available for philosophers who would like to practise philosophy in therapeutic settings.”–Practical Philosophy

“Of the relatively few books on philosophical counseling currently available, Peter Raabe has written one of the best: namely, Philosophical Counseling: Theory and Practice...an admirable and useful book.”–Metapsychology

5.0 out of 5 stars Great selection of philosophical counseling applications, February 8, 2005
This review is from: Issues in Philosophical Counseling: (Hardcover)
Mr. Raabe's scholarly yet practical compendium of philosophical counseling applications and issues is the perfect compliment to his earlier work: Philosophical Counseling: Theory and Practice (2001). Peter moves beyond theory and technique and demonstrates philosophical counseling principles with real world issues and case examples, based on his extensive experience as a philosophical counselor and supervisor. He provides essential supervision for both philosophical counselors and clinicians. Being a psychotherapist trained as a supervisor in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), I quickly recognized the wealth of supervisory knowledge Peter offers in this volume. His writing style reflects his mastery of critical thinking and philosophical inquiry yet he maintains a comfortable non-technical approach with the reader. It is clear that Mr. Raabe knows his craft well when selecting rich case histories that allow the reader to conceptualize issues along with the author, who models his thinking for his audience. Being a clinical social worker, I was especially impressed with Mr. Raabe's mastery of gender dynamics within the counseling process. Overall, highly recommended for philosophical counselors, clinicians training in philosophical principles and supevisors seeking a standardized text to train others. This work, like his other, will stand the test of time.
