Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 7-12. Has the U.S. largely overcome racism? It depends on whether you talk to whites or minorities. Which minorities? What does minority mean? Can America accept racial diversity? Should blacks be paid back for slavery? This volume in the Contemporary Issues series examines controversies about race in this country with up-to-date discussions about affirmative action, racial profiling, hate crimes, diversity training, the president's National Dialogue on Race, and other issues. Williams presents many sides of the arguments and many viewpoints, except for those of Native Americans, who get barely a passing mention. Her focus is on black-white relations; but she does talk about Latinos (who are replacing African Americans as the largest minority group) and Asian Americans. There's much here to open up classroom debate and for personal reading. The excellent chapter notes and fully annotated bibliographies of books, magazines, organizations to contact, and Web sites will help those who want to continue the discussion. Hazel Rochman
