5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a translation for both literalists and poets!, March 17, 2005

This review is from: Isv New Testament Student Edition (Paperback)
The ISV is a wonderful translation for reading, study, and memorization. It combines both the dedicated scholarly analysis and translation fans of the NASB enjoy, with a much less wooden rendering of both the Greek and Hebrew texts. Poetry such as the Psalms and NT hymns are rendered in metric poetic form, some even rhyme.

David Black, known worldwide as one of the prominent experts on biblical greek, is only part of a committee of translators of this edition, all of whom have much experience in Bible translation and original languages. The entire edition of this translation is due in the next few years, and I am looking forward to using it as my primary Bible.

4.0 out of 5 stars The ISV, May 3, 2010

This review is from: Isv New Testament Student Edition (Paperback)
For those looking for an accurate and simple reading of the text this is a work that should be in your library as an aid to study. No person teaching Bible studies should use only 1 translation. Most translations have a bias snuck in somewhere due to tradition or ignorance. Thus, Bible students should always consider multiple translations to get a feel for the text, especially if they do not have access to the Greeek and Hebrew.

In today's world, we have one extreme or the other. People are either running around yelling the KJV is the only accurate translation or they go the other extreme and use only a paraphrase. It is simply divisive to say the KJV is the only accurate way to go, and it is even worse to run to a paraphrase to learn God's word. Paraphrases DO NOT accurately communicate what the writer's were saying. Paraphrases are distortions of God's word.

This is why I like to read and use the ISV when I teach. This translation is not watered down. Nor do I have to have confused looks from the people when reading language from 15th 16th Century. .......For example in verse 9b; "durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee". "Durst and thee?"
The ISV reads more clearly; "did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him but said, "May the Lord rebuke you!" Such a difference!

1.0 out of 5 stars Change for no good reason, July 19, 2009
This review is from: Isv New Testament Student Edition (Paperback)
This was a promising translation, until the translation team made the decision to remove the word "Christ" from the New Testament, and replace it with the equivilant word "Messiah". Why? Because they could. Forget 2000 years of history. There was no good reason to change the very word from which Christianty gets it's name, just another attempt to remove the word "Christ" from the English Language.
