Editorial Reviews

2012 three disc (two CDs + DVD) live release. Pretty Maids are celebrating their 30th anniversary as a band with It Comes Alive. This release follows up their successful and highly acclaimed 2010 album Pandemonium, which, by fans and reviewers alike, was rated as the best Pretty Maids album since their heyday back in the '80s. On October 1st 2011, Pretty Maids gathered with an enthusiastic and highly explosive crowd of diehard fans in Pratteln, Switzerland to fulfill the demand for live product from the band. The outcome of that special night can be witnessed on It Comes Alive which shows the band at the top of their game, performing songs spanning a 30 year career.

FINALLY a live DVD from the band I consider the greatest band in the history of music. I have been waiting for this half my life.

Life is not fair... and Pretty Maids prove it. They should be massive. Whether held back by their band name, or labels, or whatever... they should be household names by now. So many far lesser bands have made it huge and yet Pretty Maids are still unknown by the masses even after a 30 year career!

I would say there is not a better songwriting team in the history of MUSIC than founding Pretty Maids members guitarist Ken Hammer and singer Ronnie Atkins (and yes, I am including McCartney and Lennon in there). On this set, Hammer and Atkins together wrote all but three songs... one being a cover and two having an extra writer credited. The two being the primary writers is true on the majority of their career even beyond the songs represented in this set. I know of no other band that has done as many albums as they have and created so many great songs with so few average songs. Their song styles go from heavy to slow and all in between (sometimes even within a single song)... and are always very melodic and written with mastery and craftsmanship. Ronnie's singing can be smoother than the finest whiskey or nice and gritty but still melodic when the heaviness and intensity is needed most and is represented in fine form on this live set. The guitar work as always sounds incredible. The drums and bass are always solid, but they are there to compliment the guitars and vocals. Pretty Maids then finish up by providing the blueprint for the best way to use keyboards within a heavy rock band.

Will someone new to them see them in the same light I am painting here? Probably not given the extreme hyping I am doing here...

Danish melodic metal band "Pretty Maids" have returned with a brand new live 2CD-DVD combo "It comes alive - Maid in Switzerland" issued by "Frontiers Records", marking their third live album and first official live video in the band's career.

"It comes alive" captures the band in support of their latest studio, the highly acclaimed "Pandemonium". One happily finds that in both production and performance, "It comes alive" proves superior to their previous live albums while the DVD is easily amongst the best filmed in the genre. Crystal clear picture, multiple camera angles, sufficient stage and lighting topped by intense performances by the band, all captured in state of the art stereo and 5.1 surround sound.

The set list relies heavily upon the latest album "Pandemonium", as it should, proving how well the new material works in a live context. Beyond such classics as "Future World" and "Back to back", the maids thankfully do not neglect their early `00s material in "Hell on high heels" and "Destination Paradise" which still hold their between their new material and their greatest hits.

Ken Hammer is quite the melodic guitar player performing the material to the letter, Ronnie Atkins is every bit the confident frontman, who might seem to struggle a tiny bit on certain choruses, but always manages to pull them off. Allan Tschicaia is a drumming powerhouse at his own right and a big part of the contemporary `Maids' music machine. The inclusion of full-time keyboardist Morten Sandager proves another great addition to the live band complementing the stage sound while reinforcing the melodic aspects of their music.

On a personal level, "It comes alive" exceeded my expectations (coming from a long-term fan of the band) validating the argument of this being the most artistically credible period in the band's career. If you are into melodic hard rock, melodic metal or power metal, buy this 2CD+DVD package and by all means you will be rewarded.

When I first learned of this being released it was one of those things I HAD to get, so I preordered it. It was a must have like the Silver Mountain DVD (which Amazon didn't carry - so I ordered from the band directly) and Running Wild's CD/DVD live Wacken show. The good news is that the Pretty Maids is an all region DVD, just as the Silver Mountain comes in both formats. So unlike Running Wild, at least these other 2 bands thought enough about their fans all over the world to ensure the DVD could be viewable in the United States as well as in Europe. Especially as these bands aren't likely to be coming to a show near you.
So how is the show? Well, they do look quite a bit older compared to when they first started, but they sound very good. I used to mourn the fact that Def Leppard went downhill after showing such promise on their debut. I don't care about that anymore. I've realized that the Pretty Maids fill that void perfectly: Great songs that show heaviness and melody and class - all without being wimpy. Most of the songs you'd expect are here: Back to Back, Future World, Red Hot and Heavy - I only wish they would've included Only in America, which is only their best song!!! But still, 5 stars all the way. I'm also pleased that another guy from Wisconsin wrote the first review up here.

Pretty Maids is among my top 10 favorite metal bands from the 80's.
Some of the reviews I have read praised "Future World" which is, in my opinion, their best albums. But other albums such as "Jump the Gun", "Pandemonium", etc are equally as good.
Judging from the quality of their songs the question about why they are not famous is a must. Let's say its a metal band that just a few of us, former headbangers from the 80's, have enjoyed exclusively as a private pleasure. Not music for the masses. A Rolex, a Rolls Royce, are treats not for everybody. The type of music PM has created for over 3 decades has reached us and we have enjoyed it ever since.

Now for this new material, the compilation of songs is extensive. For instance, "Rodeo" is included for the first time. This is a catchy song I had never listened "Live". Besides, you get a DVD, all for $20.00.
Just the DVD is worth those $20 bucks and you get the CD as complimentary.

My wish is to see this metal band live. Hope they cross the Atlantic some day to conquer new territories.
