Luke and Ali. Wow. I wasn't sure anyone could top Sawyer and Chloe (from Head Over Heels) in my mind, but I think Luke and Ali just might have. I will admit that after six books in a contemporary romance series I had my doubts that Jill could continue on with Lucky Harbor and still make them fresh, but she does. The plot in It Had To Be You brings a little element of suspense, too, which I always enjoy.

Luke is your typical brooding, alpha male who takes responsibility for many things that have gone wrong to those he loves. He constructs walls around his heart so he won't have to let anyone else in and disappoint them. Ali is a girl that has had a lot of crap dumped on her throughout life but still manages to see the glass as half full. I think she reminds all of us that we can choose to be happy and kick life's butt or we can let life kick our butt.

I love the dialogue Jill writes in her stories. There are so many lines I wanted to quote here but if I started it would be about half the book and I don't think Jill would appreciate that. I love the smart quips from the characters and the honesty that Ali brings to the story. She says things we are all thinking which is so refreshing. Luke is a bit surprised by her honesty, too, but it is one of the many things he loves about her. He tries very hard to resist Ali and she isn't throwing herself at him so it is great to see this budding romance.

The Lucky Harbor books are usually pretty hot and sexy with passionate characters. I actually really liked that It Had To Be You didn't have as many intimate scenes (or didn't appear to because I didn't really count) as the others. Luke and Ali waited a long time before they gave into a physical relationship and it fit them and the story well.

I usually love Jill Shalvis books and eagerly await the next one, but "It Had to Be You" is just plain silly and not up to her usual standard. The heroine was TSTL and I kept feeling as if the author was trying to write an episode of I Love Lucy rather than a romance story -- there were so many instances in which the heroine proved herself to be totally lacking in common sense that it became wildly irritating. For example: the police is on the case but she decides to break into Teddy's car with her friend? Stealing back the pot in the first place? I could go on. It is possible that this was intended to be a farce but if so, it fell totally flat for me and just gave me a real dislike of this silly heroine. I loved the hero but all this waffling back and forth ("we can't be together cause I'll hurt her") seemed forced and as an "obstacle" to their romance, it didn't feel real for a second. Also, he's a cop with common sense and every time the heroine made a dumb decision (she makes them constantly) I couldn't help but think how the charm would wear off once they were together forever, taking the shine off their HEA. Finally, this book felt as if it was being stretched to make the absolute minimum number of words for this format, it felt even "lighter" than most books in this genre. I'm sorry to be so "down" on a Shalvis book but really this one is just a bit too silly.

I'm a big fan of this series and have really liked every story...until this one. I LOVED it!

It's one of those rarities where you have equally strong feelings for both main characters. Ali Winter has had a tough life but through it all, she's held her head up high and believed life would get better, not in a sappy way but more resolute. You couldn't help admiring her spirit. The town loves her.

Luke Hanover is one of the good guys, the person you can count on to do the right thing but underneath that determination is a bag full of guilt about the three times in his life where he fell short (in his own eyes) and he's starting to collapse under it.

How they meet
Ali was living with her dog of a boyfriend, Teddy, the town darling. He was renting Luke's house in Lucky Harbor, decided he was ending the lease (and their relationship) but didn't tell her until after he'd moved out. Luke shows up and finds Ali in all her underwear glory with nowhere to go. They agree she can stay until she finds another place to live.

The issues
Before Ali can begin figuring out a new life plan, money in Teddy's office ($50,000) turns up missing and all fingers point at the scorned ex-girlfriend. Luke's a SF detective who just wanted to come home for three weeks to rest and recover from a really bad case and just doesn't want to get involved.

The romance
Despite what his head wants to do, Luke can no more abandon the delightful and beautiful soul of Ali and repeatedly gives in to his heart. Ali knows the last thing she needs is another man to leave her (in three weeks) but their attraction to each other is pretty powerful. They both see each others' true nature and their chemistry is HOT.

I've wandered around, finally found somebody who could make me be true. - Frank Sinatra, IT HAD TO BE YOU.

Jill Shalvis returns to Lucky Harbor with Book 7 in the series, IT HAD TO BE YOU. Shalvis kicked off the series with three sisters who run the B&B - Maddie, Tara, and Chloe - in Books 1, 2, and 3. Readers loved the characters from this charming coastal town, so Shalvis delivered three strangers-turned-friends - Mallory, Amy, and Grace - in Books 5, 6, and 7. This time, Shalvis kicks off another trilogy of male friends, hunky public servants, in IT HAD TO BE YOU.

Luke, a police detective in San Francisco, escapes from a case gone wrong to his grandmother's home in Lucky Harbor. He inherited it form her and thought his last renter had vacated it. Except the renter stranded his former girlfriend in the house - a complication that Luke does not need. Ali recognizes her instant attraction to Luke, thinking he is a burglar, when he catchers her nearly naked in his house. Soon they share the complications in their lives - he carries the weight of a murder victim; she is a theft suspect. Luke lends his expertise in helping Ali clear her name In return, she sprinkles sunshine in his life. The plot follows a familiar formula ... yet Shalvis adds her signature "sweet but sexy" storytelling to memorize readers once again with Lucky Harbor. In between the sizzling passion, Ali delivers a revelation to Luke that she has the power to be happy ... and he has the same power. It is a simple reminder of why I read romance - it makes me happy.

IT HAD TO BE YOU is a standalone novel where characters from previous books are referenced but do not steal the thunder from the new characters unfolding in the plot. Recommended read for those who seek an escape through cozy contemporary romance.

I received an ARC from the publisher for my independent review.
