So I just finished the book today and am a bit underwhelmed ...but let me explain: there were definite, sweet moments in the book I really enjoyed, but in between those moments I found myself somewhat bored*forgive me*. I own and have read all of Deeane's other books and thoroughly enjoyed them all (I think A Bride in the Bargain or Maid to Match are my favorites of hers though) and for some reason this just didn't measure up the same for me. I hate to say that because it is obvious a lot of time and research went into this book, and you can really feel this was one magnificent event in our history. That being said, I guess I felt like a lost tourist at times.

The main characters are good but I got frustrated with them at the end *SPOILER ALERT* it seemed to go from 5 to 100 in the romantic department the last few chapters. Don't get me wrong, I like romance, but it was so much so quickly I rolled my eyes and could hardly recognize the characters for all the sudden, unhindered passion.

This is just my personal opinion, so please don't get all huffy with me. It just isn't my favorite Dee, and probably one I could have gone without. (Side note:The pictures on the kindle are super cool).

With It Happened at the Fair, Deeanne Gist brings readers yet another beautifully written romance that is quite charming. Lead protagonists Cullen McNamara and Della Wentworth are beautifully developed and the storyline is riveting. But it is Ms Gist's meticulous research that makes this book such an outstanding read. Her attention to historical detail is phenomenal and her descriptions of the Chicago World's Fair bring this story vibrantly to life.

Cullen is quite a bit older than Della but she is quite mature (and sensible) for her young age. Cullen is quite sweet and he always treats Della with utmost respect. He is very humble and lacks self-confidence when it comes to his invention. In the beginning of the story, due to her father's dire warnings about strangers, Della is very cautious around Cullen. She slowly relaxes her guard around Cullen, but late in the novel, a secret Cullen has been keeping threatens to destroy their relationship.

Ms. Gist does not shy away from sensitive topics in her novels and It Happened at the Fair is no exception. She fully explores the controversy that surrounded teaching deaf students lip reading versus sign language. The reactions to Cullen's increasing deafness accurately portray the prejudice and misconceptions that were often encountered by deaf people during the time period. Adding to the story's authenticity is Cullen's increasing concern about the growing recession and financial instability of banking institutions.

It Happened at the Fair is a fascinating historical romance and Deeanne Gist does a wonderful job incorporating fact with fiction. It is an informative and entertaining novel that is quite engrossing. An incredibly well-written story that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a sweet romance with a light Christian element.

I have read and re-read every Deeann Gist book since I first picked up A Bride Most Begrudging. However, It Happened at The Fair is my least favorite. I can’t seem to nail down what is was about this book that I found uninteresting, whether I’m used to Deeann writing about strong female, albeit quirky, characters, I found Della to be flat and somewhat predictable. Deeann spent more time describing the scenes I didn’t have much of an opportunity to fall in love with the characters (Essie Spreckelmeyer) Still, this is a gem in a somewhat lacking genre.

I've read all of her books and was looking forward to this one for months! However, it was not at all on same level as her previous books. I agree with a couple of reviewers that there was way too much technical description of the fair and not enough romance. The non-words in italics were not explained and I thought something was wrong with my Kindle version. It was very annoying throughout the book. I give this 3 stars only because all of her other books were so good. Probably should have been 2 stars as I couldn't wait to be done with it.

The World's Fair of 1893 in Chicago must have been an extraordinary event. The descriptive details by the author Deeanne Gist in It Happened at the Fair paint an amazing picture of architecture and displays that were extremely grand in Chicago.

I appreciated the pictures from the actual event that were included at the beginning of most chapters. These pictures really show the reader the magnitude of the fair and how great the challenges were that Cullen MacNamara is faced with as an exhibitor with his Sprinkler system.
Cullen MacNamara is losing his hearing and seeks out Della a lip reading tutor. After months of lessons and spending time together Cullen realizes that she is the desire of his heart, and not his lifelong friend and finance Wanda.

So what is he to do since he went to Chicago to honor his family, and now that his heart has found someone else he is going to dishonor his family by breaking his engagement? His dad has put the family in debt to send him to fair with the hope in his heart that his will be successful and honor his mother.

This story will put you through a cycle of emotions from forgiveness, to grief and deception throughout it. It Happened at the Fair was a wonderful read and I fell in love with Cullen.
