Review

Bob Crosby took me back to my (and everyone's) deliciously goofy days in the public school classroom. Trembling, I held these pages with joy and terror; you will, too, reader. --Dr. David Kirby, Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of English, Florida State University

Bob Crosby . . . rekindles memories of kids, both present and past, who made our jobs such a challenge and joy. Teachers, parents, and students can all identify with the real-life characters and events described in this book. Every person who ever sat through a high school English class will finish the book wishing Mr. Crosby had been their teacher, despite the high jinks and hilarity. --William Kemp, principal, Northeast High School, 1995-2007

I just retired from teaching after spending 38 years in the classroom. This book brings back all the great memories of those many years. It covers all aspects of school life, from the volleyball court to the classroom. It will cause you not only to smile but also to laugh outloud. Anyone who has ever been to school will enjoy this book.

I always believed being a Social Worker in the 1960's thru the late 80's was a great career choice. WRONG!!! I should have been a teacher. I was a high school and college student though with a unique sense of humor and believed until I read "It happened in School" teachers did not have a clue. This book and the author Bob Crosby bring back hilarious memories of the greatest of times. The book is a real page turner, full of wit. So sit back, relax and get ready to go on a truly humorous adventure in reading.

Once I picked up this book, I didn't put it down till I was finished! It covers all the awkward stages during your middle teenage years with true stories from the rarely told side of the teacher. I found myself laughing out loud, several times, while reading it on an airplane. Highly recommend it for teachers, parents and students (troublemakers especially!)

I found myself up very late reading story after story. I'd tell myself, "Ok, this is the last one" but then continue on to the next. Every story is unique, yet all have humor you'll find yourself yearning for. Funny and suspenseful!

Hopefully, every kid has one (or more) great teachers in their lifetime of schooling. I was one of those lucky kids. The author of this book, Bob Crosby, was my sophomore English teacher at Northeast High School in 1975. He impacted my life. He was a strong, fair, funny teacher - even to a kid like me who talked way too much and asked too many questions. He graded my essays always with an open mind. I even set the curve a few times-as to make the grading process easier on him! So, Mr. Crosby, here's one last essay for you. Go easy on me, please.

I read this book from cover to cover one Sunday morning and busted out laughing through most of the stories. I knew some of the kids and teachers but that really doesn't matter because the stories are freakin' FUNNY. And I do believe I was present for some of his pranks. They ring a very vague school bell from my long ago, now newly present past.

I would highly recommend this book as a gift from any parent to their kid nervously starting high school - let them read it and believe that high school will be an OK place. Other teachers should read this so they know it's OK to have fun with a notsofunsometimes kind of job. I have passed on many copies of this book to fellow alumni and to friends who just like to laugh.

And I'm not biased, I swear!

Believe it or not, the fact that we share a last name has nothing to do with my writing this review. Bob Crosby or as I call him, Dad, has an amazing ability to put his hilarious stories on paper. There are probably less than 5 stories out of the 50 chapters that I had not already heard prior to reading the book. Even the ones I'd heard him tell time and time again literally still made me laugh out loud when I was reading. The chapters are pretty short and very funny, making It Happened in School a very quick read. I couldn't put it down until I'd read it cover to cover. I'm so excited that my dad is able to share these stories with so many people now, and I'm really looking forward to volume 2. If I laughed that much at stories I already knew, I can't even imagine how funny the next book will be with teachers from all over submitting their own personal favorites. Now in my own teaching career I am constantly aware of the funny little things that happen in school that are potential additions to the next installment of It Happened in School. There is no doubt an endless supply of hysterics if teachers and students alike will take the opportunity to submit their stories.

I am a self-proclaimed book nerd who reads everywhere I go, so I have read a lot of good and bad books. Though I find humor in many books, I rarely read something so funny that I am laughing out loud. This book was one of the few exceptions. Every story put a smile on my face, made me remember my own high school days and had me wishing I had been a little more of a prankster myself. However, there were some real zingers in there that had me doubled over laughing so hard that I was crying! I reread some stories at least 5 or 6 times just because they were so funny and you can just picture the scenario playing itself out. The chapters are short, and quick to read so even the most reluctant readers will zip through it with no problem. I recommend this book to all teachers, students, public and home libraries and anyone just wanting a good laugh. You'll definitely get your money's worth of humor. If Crosby really is thinking of writing a Volume II, I'll certainly be one of the first in line to purchase that one too!
